Varjo announces Reality Cloud platform for VR that feels like you’re really there

Varjo Technologies Oy, a Finnish maker of industrial-grade virtual and mixed-reality hardware and software, today announced its new VR “virtual teleportation” platform that will allow people to transport others visually into the same room.

To make this work, the technology in the Varjo XR-3 headset scans the area around the user to create a true-to-life 3D rendering of the room in order to enable real-time reality sharing for collaboration with other users. The scan then broadcasts into Varjo’s Reality Cloud platform, which can recreate the room for other collaborators.

“We believe that Varjo’s vision for the metaverse will elevate humanity during the next decade more than any other technology in the world,” said Varjo Chief Executive Timo Toikkanen.

Varjo’s headsets represent some of the best-in-class virtual and mixed-reality capable devices with ultralow-latency video and human-eye resolution displays. That means they can render scenes that look like one is actually there.

With the Varjo Reality Cloud platform, the headset will use low-latency video pass-through and light detection and ranging or lidar sensors to provide a high-quality map of the room. The rest of the computing is done in the cloud, which is then rendered for users collaborating with the host, so they can see themselves in the same space.

“What we’re building with our vision for the Varjo Reality Cloud will release our physical reality from the laws of physics,” said Toikkanen. “The programmable world that once existed only behind our screens can now merge with our surrounding reality – forever changing the choreography of everyday life.”

Varjo has also developed a proprietary foveated transport algorithm, which tracks the user’s gaze and focuses processor cycles on only what the user is looking at. As a result, the real-time human-eye resolution and wide-field-of-view 3D video feed can be transported in single megabytes per second to any device.

To further bring this to fruition, Varjo also announced the acquisition of Norwegian 3D collaboration company Dimension10. The company creates virtual meeting suites designed for architecture, engineering and construction teams. Varjo expects it will become an integral part of Reality Cloud’s collaboration capabilities.

Existing customers and partners will be able to access the Varjo Reality Cloud platform starting later this year during alpha access.
