With new website, Google provides support for Americans facing food insecurity

Google LLC today announced a new website and additional resources for Americans experiencing food insecurity.

Starting today, people can find free food support across all 50 states on the Find Food Support site. Feeding America estimates that 45 million people, one in seven people in the U.S. experienced food insecurity in 2020, which was worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In order to help with increased searches for free food sites over the past year, Google worked with No Hungry Kid, FoodFinder and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Together with them, Google has harvested more than 90,000 locations across the U.S. offering free food support, with more to come.

To use the locator tool, users just type in an address above the map – which is slightly down the page — on a desktop or mobile device. After that free food locations are marked with blue bubbles and clicking on them will reveal details such as days and hours of operation.

The site also provides even more resources collected for people in need including how to search for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. This is a set of programs that vary by state with different eligibility requirements, and a search on Google can help reveal how to get signed up.

A set of other resource links include sites that support seniors, families with children, military families, benefit sites by state, and hotlines that can be called or texted.

The website also includes a series of YouTube videos highlighting multiple organizations across the country working to address food insecurity and poverty within their own communities. These organizations include FoodCycle LA, which works with food retailers to divert fresh food from going into the trash to local communities, and the University of Michigan’s Maize & Blue Cupboard, which says 30% of its students experience food insecurity.

The Find Food Support site isn’t just for people suffering from food insecurity, people seeking to help can also visit the site and discover where they can contribute.

Getting involved can include growers and farmers donating extra food. People can also donate food or time, learn how to prevent food waste, take part in veteran-led initiatives and deliver food to affected individuals for organizations such as Meals on Wheels.
