Celona and NTT team up on private 5G network connectivity for enterprises

Private mobile network operator Celona Inc. is partnering with Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. on a new 5G local area network offering for enterprises.

Celona said today that NTT is leveraging its private 5G network technology as the basis of its new P5G wireless offering that aims to provide cloud-native network connectivity for major enterprises.

The new service is really a joint offering for enterprises that provides low-latency and deterministic, 5G-based connectivity for critical edge applications that require a subsecond response, such as autonomous mobile robots and mixed reality headsets. Celona’s Edgeless Enterprise architecture uses a cloud-native network operating system that delivers policy-based routing, quality of service and security segmentation. The architecture also relies on Celona’s proprietary MicroSlicing tech to enable advanced network slicing that can guarantee key service levels and consistent application delivery.

Key features of the NTT P5G service include network and policy automation for complex deployments, secure device and application network segmentation that’s tied to enterprise policies, and direct integration with existing enterprise network backbones, preventing the need for separate cabling infrastructure to support 5G. The P5G network offering will provide complete indoor and outdoor coverage, and is based on a software-defined operational model that can track key performance indicators, the companies said.

NTT’s P5G service provides standardized and centrally managed implementation that takes advantage of a range of shared and licensed spectrum options, and ensures cloud-native integration of 5G network services with private, edge, metro and public cloud information technology environments. It’s designed to accelerate the adoption of digital automation initiatives across enterprises by bridging the gap between 5G and existing information technology networks and industrial “internet of things” infrastructure, the companies said.

The service is targeted at the manufacturing and automotive industries, where it can enable factory automation, and also warehouse operations, the companies said. There, it can facilitate more advanced robotics, for example. Another possible use case is the digitization of hospital and staff experiences in healthcare settings.

Shahid Ahmad, NTT’s group executive vice president of new ventures and innovation, said the importance of P5G is it helps its enterprise customers to consume private 5G technology with relative ease for the first time.

Celona co-founder and Chief Executive Rajeev Shah stressed that P5G will help usher in a new generation of enterprise and industrial applications. “It is now possible to realize multiple transformative initiatives for industry 4,0, bridging the digital divide and enabling seamless mobility between private and public 5G networks,” he said.
