Fivetran debuts a new Business Critical tier for highly sensitive data integration

Data integration provider Fivetran Inc. is beefing up compliance with a new premium product tier called Fivetran Business Critical that’s being made available starting today.

Fivetran sells data integration tools in the shape of its proprietary “connectors” that enable the smooth transfer of data from numerous popular sources to cloud data warehouses, where it can be analyzed for business insights more easily.

The platform does away with the need to build a data connector for each individual data source as it simply automates the entire process. It offers prebuilt data connectors that can automatically adjust to schema and application programming interface changes, helping ensure the continuity of data projects. Previously, companies would need to build complicated “extract, transform and load” or ETL pipelines for each data source, which is a difficult and resource-intensive task.

Fivetran’s data connectors make it faster and easier for companies to combine data from multiple sources to get a more centralized view of their finances, marketing, sales and other business operations.

The Business Critical product tier is designed for enterprises that need the highest level of protection for sensitive data such as personally identifiable information as it’s transferred from various sources to cloud data warehouses. The offering is intended to comply with data regulations such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, the California Consumer Privacy Act, plus industry compliance measures such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Payment Card Industry Standard.

Fivetran claims the new tier means it’s the only software-as-a-service-based ETL product in the industry to offer full HIPAA compatibility and PCI DSS Level 1 validation, meeting the requirements necessary to safeguard data in the healthcare, retail, finance and e-commerce industries.

Fivetran Vice President of Product Fraser Harris said companies use Fivetran’s data connectors to enable quick and reliable access to their data, and that security is now a crucial element of the reliability it provides. The new offering works with both Snowflake Inc. and Amazon Web Services Inc.’s data warehouse services, Fivetran said. For customers that send data to AWS, Fivetran goes a step further, offering a private networking option with AWS PrivateLink, a direct service to Amazon’s cloud data centers that bypasses the public internet.

Snowflake Senior Vice President of Product Christian Kleinerman said protecting sensitive data has always been a top priority for his company. “The new Fivetran Business Critical offering is the perfect complement to our own Business Critical Edition, allowing enterprises with extremely sensitive data to create secure, automated data pipelines into Snowflake,” he said.

Another key feature is Fivetran’s customer-operated key management system, allowing customers to hold the encryption keys that are used to encrypt data as it is being transferred.

The availability of Fivetran Business Critical provides differentiation for the company at a time when the data integration segment is becoming more competitive, with the emergence of rivals such as Airbyte Inc., which offers open-source data connectors to and from many of the same sources.
