Trilio announces new ransomware protection in its Kubernetes backup platform

Cloud-native data protection firm Trilio Data Inc. today announced the release of a new version of TrilioVault for Kubernetes.

The new release offers a comprehensive approach to ransomware protection and recoverability in alignment with the National Institute of Standards and Technology Cybersecurity Framework and support of zero trust architectures. Kubernetes orchestrates the use of software containers that enable applications to run in multiple computing environments.

Trilio for Kubernetes v2.5 leverages the NIST Cybersecurity Framework to align its capabilities and approach, specifically to deliver best practices detailed in the Data Integrity projects of the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence at NIST. The three main components of the framework include Identify and Protect, Detect and Mitigate and Recover. All Trilio for Kubernetes ransomware protection features from this new release and onward will align to this framework.

The new features in the release include the ability to create immutable backups to protect against any malicious attempts to modify or delete the backups. The immutability capability works with S3-based object-locking features to prevent backups from being deleted during the retention period. When the retention period is over, the backups are automatically cleared by the S3 object-locking mechanism which is controlled by Trilio for Kubernetes.

Trilio enables users to set specific policies at the application level to provide flexibility and control over a multicloud deployment. The granular level of control is claimed to be in contrast to other solutions, which allow only target-level retention, creating administrative overhead.

With the new release, users can now encrypt backups with a Linux Unified Key Setup encryption format that uses an AES-256 cipher algorithm so that the backups cannot be read or stolen. The implementation includes at-rest and in-flight encryption. The service also leverages Key Management Systems, so Kubernetes users can control the encryption and the associated keys for the applications.

Other additional features in the new release included multi-namespace backup support, backup target support and authentication support.

“Trilio is committed to the challenge of solving the exponentially growing problem of ransomware attacks — and intends to do so in the most complete manner possible through alignment to cybersecurity best practices,” David Safaii, chief executive officer of Trilio, said in a statement. “TrilioVault for Kubernetes offers features that enable protection and recovery from ransomware, giving our customers peace of mind.”
