Under the microscope: HPE’s journey to the top of the cloud services market

Enterprises are turning to cloud and hybrid cloud solutions, resulting in the need for easily managed cloud architecture globally.

Chief technology officers now have the option of remotely deploying applications through Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.’s GreenLake console, thanks to cloud-native on-prem infrastructure. Aruba Central, HPE’s cloud-based network management and monitoring solution, is assisting HPE in its journey to the top of the cloud services market.

However, even with HPE’s strides in the cloud services market, it still faces a few challenges on its way to the top, according to Keith Townsend (pictured), founder and chief executive officer of The CTO Advisor.

“As a CTO, I’m looking at platforms and seeing the building blocks there,” he said. “We talked to the HPE storage team on how they’re building the abstractions, that they can take anything from their ProLiant line, build the necessary storage underlay, and then abstract that away with GreenLake.”

Townsend spoke with Dave Vellante, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the HPE GreenLake Announcement event. They discussed cloud service management, HPE’s customer relationships and more. (* Disclosure below.)

Growth through relationships

Customer relationships are among the most crucial factors for success, which Townsend says HPE must keep top of mind.

“The VP of operations doesn’t want to change his operations. He doesn’t want disruption,” Townsend said. “HPE needs to get into the chief data officers, the chief marketing officers’ office and have these very difficult conversations in sales so that they can eventually show that they can execute.”

HPE also needs to improve its scope of customers outside of just CIOs, according to Townsend.

“They have the opportunity to get customers outside of the CIO, and I think they’re moving fast enough,” he said. “This is really hard stuff. Especially when you start to deal with data and the most valuable asset of an organization.”

Townsend does commend HPE’s cadence in bringing in new customers while still retaining old ones.
