Tabnine partners with Gitpod to bring AI code assistant to automated dev environments

Tabnine Ltd., an artificial intelligence-powered code completion tool maker, today announced it has partnered with Gitpod GmbH, an open-source developer platform startup, to integrate its AI assistant into Gitpod’s automated developer workspaces.

Using an AI model, Tabnine predicts as developers type code based on the current project and local code and then provides suggestions on what should come next. As result, it can deliver intelligent code completion that can do away with tedious, repetitive typing tasks.

Gitpod provisions ready-to-code developer environments with a single click that can be launched from any codebase that’s designed to do all the work behind the scenes so that developers can get directly to work. The platform is natively integrated with GitLab, GitHub and BitBucket so it can automatically and continuously build its environment.

Now, by integrating the Tabnine AI-powered assistant, developers also get access to code completion capability for numerous languages, including JavaScript, Java, Python, PHP, Go, C/C++ and more.

“At Tabnine, we are constantly looking for ways to improve the development experience and support developers with the tools they need to quickly contribute to their organization,” said Brandon Jung, the company’s vice president of ecosystems and business development.

Code suggestions happen inline as typing occurs and are easy to understand and interruption-free, according to Tabnine. They can also be run in the cloud or locally. The AI training data is never shared to make sure that the code stays compliant with privacy and security regulations.

Tabnine does use a large open-source codebase to train itself from across the globe in order to provide some best practices. Also, the more team members invited and added, the faster Tabnine learns the team’s codebase, preferences and patterns and thus can make more accurate suggestions.

By combining AI code completion with Gitpod’s zero-install developer environment streamlines developer workflows at both ends on startup and development. The integration makes onboarding new developers easier and enables more efficient code review as well as improving collaboration for teams.

“We have a relentless focus on putting developers’ interest first in order to help automate and speed up their workflows,” said Johannes Landgraf, co-founder and chief commercial officer at Gitpod.

The integrated Tabnine solution is available now and can be accessed as a VS Code extension into any Gitpod project.
