Couchbase debuts Capella, a hosted database-as-a-service on Amazon’s cloud

Couchbase Inc. is getting into the hosted database-as-a-service game with the launch of Couchbase Capella on Amazon Web Services Inc.’s cloud platform.

Couchbase Capella is a fully managed and automated version of Couchbase Server. That’s a popular NoSQL database used to power modern enterprise applications.

Unlike traditional databases that can accommodate either structured or unstructured data, Couchbase’s software can handle both types at once. It also functions as a data cache, meaning enterprises can accomplish with one system what used to require three.

Not surprisingly, that means one of the key advantages of Couchbase is a lower total cost of ownership. It also simplifies the work of administrators and developers, since they have to operate fewer databases to keep applications running.

Now, by bringing Couchbase to AWS, customers lives are made even easier. Benefits of accessing Couchbase as a service include simple deployment in just a few clicks, and a single management pane from which to manage multicluster, multiregion and multicloud operations.

Other benefits include the extremely high availability and reliability that AWS is known for. Of course, Couchbase Capella on AWS also means it’s easy to access a range of AWS Cloud services that customers can use to enhance applications that leverage the database. The Capella control plane integrates with more than 20 AWS services, providing low-latency connectivity to Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, Amazon Elastic Block Store, AWS Labda, AWS Fargate and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service, among others.

The company believes this easy access to AWS services will be a critical factor for many of its customers. It cites research from Gartner Inc. that says the primary concern for data analytics teams in future will be the alignment of the myriad cloud services they use with appropriate use cases and workloads.

For developers, meanwhile, Capella just makes life much easier, freeing them from the responsibilities of running a database so they can focus more of their time on improving their applications.

“The hosted DBaaS provides customers with the flexibility and agility of a cloud database without being slowed down by administrative infrastructure hurdles so they can build modern apps faster,” said Sabina Joseph, director of Americas ISVs at AWS. She added that AWS is working with Couchbase through the AWS SaaS Factory Program to enable enterprises to deploy business-critical applications more easily on AWS.

Scott Anderson, Couchbase’s senior vice president of product management, said the launch of Capella means customers can now run its database anywhere, from the data center to any cloud and the network edge. “With the introduction of our Couchbase Capella hosted DBaaS, we are offering customers the fastest, easiest and most cost-effective way to deploy our modern database in the cloud for accelerated application development,” he added.

Couchbase said Capella is generally available on AWS starting today, and that it will come to more cloud platforms in the near future.

The launch of Couchbase Capella comes on the eve of the company’s annual user conference, Couchbase ConnectONLINE 2021, that kicks off on Oct. 20. Matt Cain, president and chief executive officer of Couchbase, stopped by theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, last week to discuss the upcoming event:
