Couchbase Capella release aims to ease database admin process for orgs and developers

At the recent ConnectONLINE conference, Couchbase Inc. announced its latest product offering in Capella: a new, fully-managed database service for enterprise applications.

The product will serve as an affordable and convenient way for enterprises to get into the Couchbase ecosystem, according to Scott Anderson (pictured), senior vice president of product management and business operations at Couchbase Inc.

“One of the goals of launching Capella and our database-as-a-service offering is increasing the accessibility of Couchbase,” he said. “So, it’s about making it easy for a developer or an enterprise to get up and running in just a few clicks and a couple of minutes, and about making it more affordable and accessible through the development phase, through the test phase and to the production phase.”

Anderson spoke with Dave Vellante, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the Couchbase ConnectONLINE event. They discussed Capella and its database-as-a-service value proposition. (* Disclosure below.)

How does Capella sets itself apart from competitors?

Capella is built on Couchbase’s Server 7 and, in addition to its easy-to-use components, focuses on having the right set of features and tools aligned to a customer’s particular stage in their development journey — according to Anderson.

“You can get up and running by signing up for our free trial. A couple of minutes later, you’ve got a database endpoint that is fully managed by Couchbase,” he explained. “And so we’re doing the monitoring and alerting. We have calls to action based on what events are occurring within the database environment, ensuring it’s always available, as well as doing kind of some of the mundane tasks of backup and recovery, scaling the environment upgrades, and so forth.”

Anderson pointed out several other novel additions to the product, including multidimensional scaling, where users can place Couchbase services like indexes and analytics within their cluster — either co-located on single nodes or with dedicated nodes for each.

Multidimensional scaling allows organizations to match their compute infrastructure to the unique needs of each of those services, thus reducing overall cloud costs and wastage, Anderson added.
