BMC expand operations management and workflow orchestration features

BMC Software Inc. today announced new features for its BMC Helix operations management and Control-M workflow orchestration platforms aimed at streamlining data science operations.

The 40-year-old company has been on a campaign to expand beyond its mainframe roots into service management, DevOps and support for artificial intelligence development, even as it has beefed up its mainframe business with several recent acquisitions. BMC says its goal is to help customers become what it calls “autonomous digital enterprises” that apply automation across their businesses in order to adapt quickly to market changes.

To that end, recent acquisitions have included ComAround Scandinavia AB and Alderstone Consulting Ltd., both of which serve the information technology service management market. “We’re reinventing the company,” said Chief Executive Ayman Sayed.

Control-M can now incorporate real-time data into application and data workflow observations with telemetry data gathered from application and data workflow behavior. Customers can also now apply workflow orchestration to a number of cloud development environments, including Amazon Web Services Inc.’s Glue, Google LLC’s Cloud Dataflow and Function, Microsoft Corp.’s Azure Data Factory, and native development platforms from Databricks Inc. and UiPath Inc.

A new Helix Digital Workplace studio enables users to customize their workspace for teams with interface layers created specifically to support different functions and lines of business. A version of Helix for communication service providers, BMC’s first vertical offering based on the platform, enables zero-touch network operations by applying artificial intelligence techniques to network operations.

Control‑M Python client is a new product that integrates data science and data engineering tools to let developers define and run data pipelines and build workflows more quickly. ServiceOps is a new feature that provides a unified environment for IT service delivery and operations management in a DevOps environment. It uses AI principles to predict change risk using service and operational data, support cross-functional collaboration and automatically recommend problem resolutions, BMC said.
