Developers break out of their shell in theCUBE’s new show, ‘The GRILL’

The tech industry is a rewarding but stressful world, and taking some time to laugh and have fun is a welcomed respite in this competitive ecosystem.

TheCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, recently announced its new show, “The GRILL,” which focuses on having fun with tech and self-parodying the industry, hosted by Annette Mullaney (pictured), comedian, journalist and former software engineer.

“We’re having people come through, they’re sharing funny stories,” Mullaney said. “We’re having a contest to find the best mansplaination of Kubernetes. Right now, I’ve got to say, a woman is in the lead. It just proves that it’s not about the man you identify as, it’s about the condescension in your heart when it comes to mansplaining.”

Mullaney spoke with John Furrier and David Nicholson, co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the recent KubeCon + CloudNativeCon NA event. They discussed theCUBE’s new show “The GRILL,” Mullaney’s comedic view of the community and more. (* Disclosure below.)

The lighter side of DevOps

Mullaney began the conversation with a few humorous insights about CO VID protocols on the convention floor.

“People are wearing masks for the most part,” she said. “I did love this red light, yellow light, green light system they came up with. Green means please touch me, I’ve been inside for too long. Red means I still care about COVID. Yellow, ask me, we’ll figure it out.”

The funniest joke she’s heard at the convention, she explained, was when she asked a man his favorite joke and he answered, “It worked on my computer.”

“The GRILL’s” goal, according to Mullaney, is to allow developers to come out of their shells and poke fun at tendencies in tech that aren’t often brought to light. Bringing out their best isn’t always easy, however.

“There is a broiling anger in the soul of every developer and every person who’s worked on technology,” Mullaney said. “And the question is going to be, can we get it on camera when they are not drunk? We’re doing our best.”
