Twitter Blue subscription service launches with ad-free articles and undo feature
Twitter Blue, Twitter Inc.’s subscription service, is now available in the U.S. and New Zealand after a soft launch in Australia and Canada earlier this year.
First rumored in May, the service costs $2.99 in the U.S. and offers a range of features meant to improve on Twitter’s standard service. The standout feature of the service “undo tweet” allows users to preview a tweet for one minute before it is sent out.
The subscription service also offers ad-free articles, a service previously known as “Scroll,” to users on iOS and desktop. Ad-free articles are available in the U.S. from publications including The Washington Post, L.A. Times, USA Today, The Atlantic, Reuters, The Daily Beast, Rolling Stone, BuzzFeed, Insider and The Hollywood Reporter.
Twitter is promising that additional publications will be added in the future as it builds more partnerships in more markets. A portion of revenue from Twitter Blue subscription fees will also go directly to publishers.
Twitter Blue subscribers get a feature called Top Articles that allows them to view the most-shared articles across their network in the last 24 hours. Described as a new and complete way of catching up on the latest on Twitter, the service is powered by Nuzzel, a news-aggregation service that was previously part of Scroll — the company, not the Twitter feature — that Twitter acquired in May.
Subscribers to Twitter Blue are also being offered new ways for customize their Twitter experience with exclusive app icons, colorful themes and bookmark folders. New in the U.S. release is custom navigation, allowing subscribers to customize what appears in their navigation bar for quicker access.
Finally, subscribers will also have access to Twitter Blue Labs. As the name suggests, the feature is a testing area with subscribers gaining early access to new features being tested before they are rolled out to Twitter Blue or to the rest of Twitter. Launch features include the ability to upload a video up to 10 minutes in length via Longer Video Uploads and pin their favorite conversations to the top of their direct messages with Pinned Conversations.
“With Twitter Blue, we are not only bringing the most active people on Twitter more of what they want, but we’re also supporting local, national and ad-free journalism in a more direct way,” Twitter concluded. “It’s early days for Twitter Blue and we’re looking forward to listening, learning, and building out even more features and tools over the coming months.”
