Starburst sheds new light on role of data mesh in corralling decentralized information
The distribution of data across multiple clouds and platforms is leading a number of enterprises to look more closely at the concept of a data mesh. This is a positive trend for Starburst Data Inc., which has seen momentum behind the data mesh concept.
“The pandemic has accelerated digital transformation and that move to become data driven,” said Justin Borgman (pictured, left), co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Starburst. “Companies inherently acknowledge that data is decentralized, and data mesh is a framework for thinking about that. It not only acknowledges that reality, but also embraces it. That’s what’s driving the interest level in the data mesh paradigm.”
Borgman spoke with Lisa Martin, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during AWS re:Invent. He was joined by Teresa Tung (pictured, right), cloud-first chief technologist at Accenture PLC, and they discussed how Starburst’s technology helps users query data across platforms and Accenture’s work with clients to meet the distributed data challenge. Finding data everywhere
Starburst’s Trino solution, formerly PrestoSQL, executes queries against data in a wide range of file systems and databases. One of its largest use cases is for querying data stored in S3 or S3-compatible object storage systems.
“The gap we saw was that basically people had data everywhere and had a challenge with how they analyze that data,” Borgman said. “Every company in this space is in transition. Whether they are moving from on-premises to the cloud or from one cloud to another cloud or undergoing digital transformation, they have left data behind everywhere.”
Accenture is working with a number of clients wrestling with the distributed data challenge that Borgman describes. The data mesh offers a way for users to think more closely about the purpose and use of critical information inside an organization.
“Many clients are already doing some aspect of the data mesh,” Tung said. “A lot of that is reviewing your existing data projects and looking at it from a data product landscape. It’s a business strategy to think about the data, and there’s a new architecture that underlines and supports that.”
