Zerto responds to new data threats with orchestrated data recovery in the cloud

With data protection encompassing backup and recovery, it is no longer a bolt-on or afterthought in enterprises; it is the last line of defense if an attack strikes.

Having a timely recovery strategy as part of the overarching security is paramount, according to Caroline Seymour (pictured, right), vice president of product marketing at Zerto Ltd., a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company.

“It’s a matter of not if you’re going to be attacked; it’s when,” Seymour said. “Our replication and unique journaling capability allows you to set up different checkpoints. So you have thousands of recovery points, and you can retrieve a specific recovery point within seconds of that attack.”

Seymour and Danielle Greshock (pictured, left), director of partner SAs and worldwide ISV at Amazon Web Services Inc., spoke with Dave Vellante, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during AWS re:Invent. They discussed Zerto’s continuous data protection technology and its partnership with AWS. (* Disclosure below.)

Revamping data recovery with Zerto’s CDP

Rethinking data protection strategies in organizations is prompted by huge workloads in the cloud and the ever-present threat of ransomware. Therefore, data protection is adjacent to overall security. Zerto addresses this need through its CDP technology that triggers a granular level of recovery not present in backups, according to Seymour.

“If you’re actually trying to recover quickly and within seconds to an attack, a deleted file or a corrupt database, you need that continuous data protection … and that’s what we’ve been delivering since the day Zerto was formed,” she said.

As an example of Zerto’s solution in action, Seymour offered a compelling use case: After TenCate Protective Fabrics fell victim to the first CryptoLocker ransomware attack, recovery took two weeks. The textile company was using the traditional backup-to-tape method, which triggered significant data loss, according to Seymour.

“They deployed Zerto and, unfortunately, a little while later they were attacked a second time with a more sophisticated case of CryptoLocker. But this time the recovery was very different … they were able to recover within minutes, and they had seconds of data loss because of our CDP technology,” Seymour explained.

Having a simple, easy and scalable data protection solution is critical for companies “to feel comfortable moving into AWS,” Greshock said. “The pandemic has absolutely accelerated a lot of businesses’ movement into the cloud, so companies that hadn’t formerly thought about using cloud technologies are now doing that.”

Zerto’s partnership with AWS ensures that any workload is protected regardless of location. Zerto also provides the mobility aspect when migrating workloads to the cloud because AWS can be used as the disaster recovery site, according to Seymour.

“If you want to back up to AWS and use cost-efficient storage, we support that with cloud tiering and immutability,” Seymour said. “We’ve just launched Zerto for AWS hands-on lab, allowing you to be able to try Zerto with AWS as a DR target and backup.”

Zerto is continuing to innovate, according to Greshock.
