Dell and VMware continue collaboration to meet demand for edge and as-a-service solutions

The industrial internet of things is expanding as companies deploy devices across the entirety of their operations. From intelligent traffic lights, to smart manufacturing floors, to retail points-of-sale, data-generating end-points are proliferating.

IDC has already gone out there on record as saying 50% of the new infrastructure out there will be deployed at the edge in the next couple of years,” said Jon Siegal (pictured, left), senior vice president of infrastructure solutions group marketing at Dell Technologies Inc. “It’s a different world in terms of what’s needed and what the challenges are.”

Siegal and Dave McGraw (pictured, right), VP of the Office of the CTO at VMware Inc., joined John Furrier, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, for a digital CUBE Conversation. They discussed how Dell and VMware’s evolving partnership continues to meet customer demand with an ever-growing product line that anticipates future trends. (* Disclosure below.)

The future is as-a-service and edge

When it comes to edge computing, there is a lack of specialized technical resources to meet issues of scale and successfully manage distributed end points securely, according to Siegal. This is solved through a collaborative approach.

Dell is working with partners that have IoT edge platforms and are running them on VMware’s VxRail hyperconverged infrastructure appliance and Dell’s PowerEdge server portfolio, according to Siegal, describing how Dell continues to build on its existing infrastructure resources to meet the demands of next-gen technological advances.

“Being able to do the processing at the edge and move results around versus moving massive amounts of data around is really key to the future going forward,” said McGraw, emphasizing the importance of distributed computing at the edge.

VMware has responded to the evolving world of enterprise technology by developing major initiatives, such as Project Pacific and Project Monterey. Leveraging SmartNICs, Project Monterey redefined architecture for not only core data centers, but also for cloud and edge environments, according to McGraw.

“We’re essentially redefining what that infrastructure looks like, making it more efficient, more performant, depending on the use case,” he said.

VMware already has a supercloud

Dell has focused on simplifying cloud as-a-service with its APEX suite of services, and VMware has been an important partner on that journey. Seeing an increase in customers looking to hand off infrastructure management completely, Dell and VMware created APEX Cloud Services With VMware Cloud.

VMware would already be considered a supercloud thanks to its ability to operate across multiple clouds, Furrier noted. VMware is working with Dell and other partners to develop a global network of points of presence to support distributed application environments and edge native application environments.

“It’s going to really transform what you see at the edge and what you also see in core data centers going forward,” McGraw said.
