Unstoppable Domains launches single sign-on service for web3 apps

Unstoppable Domains, a platform for user-controlled digital identity using web3 technology, today announced the global launch of “Login with Unstoppable,” which provides single sign-on capability for Ethereum and Polygon apps.

The company provides domain names as nonfungible tokens, which are represented as cryptographic assets on a blockchain, and can be used with the new service to share data online, including email addresses, NFTs and other information, among the applications they use.

“Login with Unstoppable provides a foundation for digital identity in the web3 era by allowing people to carry a unique username across wallets, apps, services, games and the metaverse,” said Matthew Gould, founder and chief executive of Unstoppable Domains. “NFT domains now become a unique internet identifier that can be used as a login with web3 superpowers.”

Web3 is the moniker given to decentralized network applications that run on blockchains often in opposition to Web 2.0, which is characterized by social media applications, wikis, blogs and so on.

The normal user experience for Web 2.0 is multiple services, each with its own login. That means having to remember a username and password that needs to be entered for each one. Many users use password managers. The objective of Login with Unstoppable is to provide a single sign-on experience for blockchain-based web3 apps where all the user needs is their Unstoppable Domain.

“Web3 is looking to disrupt older Web 2.0 tech and this is an area that is ripe for disruption,” said John Furrier, co-founder of SiliconANGLE. “The leaders in domain names for Web 2.0 were Network Solutions and GoDaddy, and for web3 it’s Unstoppable. It’s another example of how pre-existing tech is replatformed and refactored in web3.”

That disruption is still ongoing as web3 solutions for user identity management become more necessary for the ever-growing ecosystem of decentralized applications built on blockchain technology. Dapps exist across every industry from decentralized finance, social media, healthcare, blogging, entertainment, gaming and more. All of these services require logins.

Different from a username and password on a Web 2.0 service, a NFT domain is completely user-owned, since it always remains under the control of the person who holds the cryptographic keys to the asset. So if a user creates a unique domain such as “username.crypto,” that can be used to authorize apps that have been integrated with Unstoppable.

For businesses, Login with Unstoppable represents the first free solution that allows users to log in using an NFT. It makes it much easier for companies to onboard new users because they can bring their own professional identities with them when they log in.

This launch comes three months after the Login with Unstoppable service went into beta test mode.

Already more than 50 companies have begun integrating Unstoppable’s service into their web3 apps. Early integrations include gaming apps Drakons, MegaCryptoPolis, Farsite and ChainGuardians; the Metaverse app Parcel, NFT projects Deadheads and The Radiant Society; as well as DeFi projects Cook Finance, DeHive and GoodGhosting.

“Logging in securely and easily can be a problem across the web,” said Rev Miller, co-founder of Atlantis World, a web3 social metaverse app. “We believe that the new Login with Unstoppable solution can abstract most of that, enabling a seamless point of entry for users into the metaverse, as well as an identity they can count on moving forwards.”

Any application built on the Ethereum or Polygon blockchains can integrate Login with Unstoppable. Thus, allowing app developers to open up greater adoption of web3 to a larger number of people through seamless login experiences.
