AWS connects women in tech, promotes gender diversity through innovative initiatives
One of Amazon Web Service’s leadership principles is “Strive to be the Earth’s best employer.” With multiple programs geared toward diversity and inclusion, AWS is walking the walk.
“Here at AWS, we’ve got this amazing event called ‘She Builds,’ and I’m an active mentor for that,” said Anna Green (pictured), head of SMB, Asia Pacific and Japan, at AWS. “And that’s all about connecting women in the tech community with programs that really speak to the way that women are thinking about their roles.”
Green spoke with theCUBE analyst Lisa Martin during the recent Women in Tech: International Women’s Day event. They discussed intentionality in career choices and how leaders are evolving diversity in hiring choices.
Self-awareness and intentionality keys to diversity in hiring
The event theme this year for the International Women’s Day was “breaking bias.” Green weighed in on her interpretation:
“Breaking the bias is about all of us being more self-aware in our workplaces. What it means to me is understanding that the employee population that all of us work in is diverse,” Green said.
Law and banking were steppingstones on her path to a career in tech; curious intentionality drove Green’s choices in building her leadership profile.
“Honestly, we need to see more women in leadership roles. I think it’s incumbent upon the organizations that are running our businesses that they make this a priority, because you can’t be what you can’t see,” Green said.
With female leaders like Green speaking up and providing role models for young women, the glass ceiling, or glass server room, is shattering. Green is doing her part to increase diversity in technology careers.
“I’m being intentional in my hiring practices … making sure that I’m looking at diverse candidates. And that means sometimes throwing the net a bit wider than what you might usually have and thinking differently about the candidates that are applying,” Green said.
