The next frontier in containerization: AWS expert weighs in

Whether for flexibility, agility, security or speed in application delivery, companies are opting for containerization solutions more than ever.

Amazon Web Services Inc., a Kubernetes proponent, is staying on the path to help developers stand up their Kubernetes environments more effectively.

I’m in the product management and developer advocacy team … in the AWS container services group where we focus on elastic containers,” said Shubha Rao (pictured), senior manager, product management at AWS. “And what I mean by elastic containers is all the AWS opinionated, out-the-box solutions … like ECS.”

Rao spoke with theCUBE industry analyst John Furrier at the recent DockerCon event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the next frontier in containerization execution from the perspective of AWS and its enterprise ecosystem. (* Disclosure below.)

What stakeholders are saying

While the AWS product ecosystem encompasses a number of vastly different configurations for containerization, the company generally recommends that its customers choose a setup that complements specific operational needs.

“So, if you have an application which you can use a pretty abstracted, like end-to-end managed by AWS service, we recommend that you start at the highest level of abstraction — that’s OK to use for your application,” Rao explained.

The trends in containerization and other cloud microservices primarily revolve around plug-and-play features, readymade solutions, and storage/deployment locations.

“Customers want to have the pluggability for their services of choice, and our EKS offerings actually help in that,” Rao explained. “We also see customers who want an opinionated, out-of-the box solution rather than building blocks. And ECS also brings you that experience. Another one of the new strengths that we are seeing is that a lot of our customer workloads are also on their data centers and in their on-prem environments, be it branch offices or data centers.”
