VMware takes on hyperscalers with subscription Cloud Provider Program

When people think of the cloud, they usually envision one of the big hyperscale providers, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft or Google. But there are hundreds of smaller cloud service providers, or CSPs, that specialize in vertical markets, serve specific geographic regions, or act as a bridge to multiple clouds.

VMware Inc.’s Cloud Provider Program is aimed at these CSPs. It’s a pay-as-you-go, software-as-a-service package that helps CSPs compete with and differentiate themselves from the hyperscale giants.

The Cloud Provider Program is “focused on helping them build business, helping them go to market, helping them … compete with the hyperscalers,” said Sean Smith (pictured), staff solutions architect at VMware Inc. “And I support several cloud providers, mostly out of the Northeast, and they’re doing really well.”

Smith spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and David Nicholson at VeeamON, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed VMware’s Cloud Provider Program, the VMware Cloud Director, CSPs vs. hyperscalers, and more. (* Disclosure below.)

Sizing up against hyperscalers

The Cloud Provider Program enables CSPs to focus on providing solutions that are not easy to get on a hyperscaler, according to Smith. There’s no hardware involved, and the offering is provided on a monthly subscription basis.

Within the Cloud Provider Program resides Cloud Director, which acts as a multi-tenant view of the infrastructure and the environment that the cloud providers are building. It can be put on top of, for instance, VMC on AWS, Google Cloud VMware Engine or ca loud service provider’s software-defined data center, according to Smith.

“All of these federate together through the VMware Cloud Director, and you end up having a single pane of glass across all of those environments,” he explained. “So whether it’s running in a hyperscaler, running on your premises or running in a cloud service provider’s environment, you have a single view, a single interface that you log into and you can see everything that’s going on inside your environment.”

This allows CSPs to focus on fostering one-to-one relationships and providing personalized support to their customers.

“Very often the people who are using those systems need their ancillary things to be close by; they can’t be 10 or 20 or 30 milliseconds away. They need to be sub-millisecond connectivity,” Smith said. “Those are the areas where the cloud service providers really shine. They can offer solutions that really enable their tenants to get what they want at the end of the day.”
