PagerDuty automates ‘tech hygiene tasks’ to raise the CX bar

Hygiene is important in the digital workplace. Not personal hygiene (although that is important too), but the repetitive, routine tasks that have to be done to keep systems running smoothly and securely.

“There’s a lot of technical work that’s kind of like brushing teeth, where you have to do it on a regular basis to keep things clean and to keep things safe,” said Mandi Walls (pictured), developer advocate at PagerDuty Inc. “Whether it’s security updates or making sure that you are on the most recent [software] versions. They’re not interesting for a lot of folks; it’s just work that has to get done.”

Walls spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Lisa Martin at PagerDuty Summit, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed digital operations, automation, and how PagerDuty can help employee job satisfaction and keep systems running smoothly. (* Disclosure below.)

PagerDuty automates technological hygiene routines

The key difference between personal and technological hygiene routines is that while there’s not a robot that can brush your teeth, tech hygiene tasks are an excellent candidate for automation.

“You put some scripts together, you employ some other tools that help you deploy updates, and push them through your software processes so they get tested appropriately … and your human beings don’t have to be involved unless a problem is surfaced,” Walls stated.

While about a third of companies are already in a proactive mode with their automation processes and can surface issues before a customer notices, many organizations have yet to start leveraging automation, according to Walls.

“There’s plenty of opportunities out there for them to be looking at smoothing out their processes, whether it’s deployments or working with their software when it gets into production, working with lots of the new tooling, and taking advantage of all the other innovative platforms that are available,” she stated.

Getting companies started with their modernization initiatives in order to take advantage of automation is PagerDuty’s sweet spot, according to Walls.

“We’re really in there helping all of these folks get started and find those first successes so that they can build off of those and build that organizational enthusiasm, as well as the internal practices, the technological practices that they’re going to need to improve things across the entire organization,” she said.

The PagerDuty platform acts as a conduit for the many tools required to manage a modern cloud environment, providing users with simple access to data and telemetry that can help them get more out of the platforms they are already using and “raise the bar across their reliability, and their performance, and their customer delight,” according to Walls.

“We see folks moving towards more and more automation-driven solutions so that they can focus more on that innovation, those new features that are going to delight their users more than the sort of hygiene that still has to get done but isn’t the stuff that’s going to make people excited about their offerings,” she said.
