Matillion and Western Union partner for a modern enterprise data stack

Every day, the world creates about 2.5 quintillion ( 2,500,000,000,000,000,000) bytes of data. But using it is a different story.

Snowflake’s Data Cloud is making the world’s data useful by providing a tech platform that allows businesses to load, transform, synchronize and orchestrate data. And Matillion Ltd., named Snowflake’s Technology Partner of the Year for Data Integration, is using its ETL tool for Snowflake to provide organizations with faster-than-traditional ETL integration. Western Union Co. is one of those companies its helping.

“The Matillion platform is about making our customers as productive as possible in terms of time to value insights on their analytics, data science, AI projects,” said Matthew Scullion (pictured, left), founder and chief executive officer of Matillion. “The more technology we can put in the platform and the easier we can make it to use, the better we can achieve that goal.”

Scullion and Harveer Singh (pictured, right), chief data architect and head of data engineering and architecture at Western Union, spoke with industry analysts Dave Vellante and Lisa Martin at Snowflake Summit, an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed infrastructure, standardization, the need for speed, and how Western Union transformed its data stack. (* Disclosure below.)

Standardization, speed the catalyst for Western Union’s partnership with Matillion

One challenge Western Union was looking to address was the need for infrastructure standardization across many geographical regions.

“I had infrastructure in one country, I had another infrastructure sitting in another country, regional teams making different decisions of bringing in different tools. Now I can standardize. I have three centers around the world — Costa Rica, India and the U.S. — I can manage them 24/7 sitting here, no problem,” Singh said.

With data moving closer to the business, the turnaround time for data results is faster, according to Singh.

“It [used to take] us 16 to 30 days to deliver data for marketing. Now I can turn it out in four hours,” he said.

Singh shared an example of Western Union’s far-reaching business impact: “When the war in Ukraine happened … we rolled out [a $0 money transfer] campaign to Ukraine within four hours of the war going on. That’s the impact that we have.”
