BIG DATA

Salesforce harnesses Dell PowerMax for mission-critical storage

Getting the most value from data, no matter where it lives, has become fundamental for enterprises in the modern age.

Dell Technologies Inc. accelerates the time between data creation and innovation by delivering a continuously modern storage experience driven by software innovation. Dell PowerMax can do up to 65 million immutable snapshots per array, enhancing recovery objectives, according to Shannon Champion (pictured, right), vice president of product marketing, primary storage, HCI and CI at Dell.

PowerMax is the world’s most secure mission-critical storage platform,” Champion explained. “The reason we can say that is because it is really designed for comprehensive cyber resiliency with a zero-trust security architecture. So PowerMax runs on 95% of the Fortune 100 companies, top 20 healthcare companies, and top 10 financial services companies in the world.”

Champion and Pete Robinson (pictured, left), director of infrastructure engineering at Salesforce Inc., spoke with industry analysts Lisa Martin and Dave Vellante at the Dell Technologies World event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how Dell PowerMax is emerging as a game-changer and how Salesforce uses it for mission-critical storage. (* Disclosure below.)

PowerMax tops software-defined

PowerMax is superior to a software-defined storage platform for mission-critical storage because recovery and operations do not have to move up the stack; thus, the application ecosystem does not change, according to Robinson.

“I think software-defined in terms of supporting what I consider mission-critical, large-scale applications is just simply not on par yet with what we do with PowerMax,” he stated. “Software-defined gets you halfway there. If you simply take an application that runs on a PowerMax and try to run it or just forklift it over to a software-defined, you’re not going to have very much luck.”

Multicloud flexibility, comprehensive cyber resiliency, and adaptable software architectures are the three key principles rendered by PowerMax when offering a continuously modern storage experience, according to Champion.

“There are 19 different security features really embedded in there,” she pointed out. “I’m not going to unpack all 19, but a couple examples: multifactor authentication, continuous ransomware anomaly detection, leveraging CloudIQ, and the industry’s most granular cyber recovery at scale.”

The partnership with Dell is founded on trust because Salesforce invests heavily in securing customer data since it is the core foundation of success, according to Robinson.

“Both companies have a customer-first mentality,” he explained. “We succeed if the customer succeeds, and we see that going back and forth in that partnership.”

As the largest PowerMax customer globally, Robinson believes Salesforce has been able to meet customers’ continuing needs for more data.

“For Salesforce, trust is our number one value, and that carries over into the infrastructure that we develop, test and roll out … PowerMax has been a key part of that,” he stated. “We really like the technology in terms of availability, reliability, performance, scalability and density.”

Dell engages its customers, including Salesforce, through feedback and testing so that it delivers the things that matter the most first, according to Champion.

“We love to hear from our customers, and there are multiple ways … you hear about beta testing, which we’re really fortunate that Salesforce can help us provide that feedback for our new releases,” she said. “We have user groups and forums and hear directly from our sales teams.”
