Technology is ruling the developed world, but that doesn’t mean it’s without its pitfalls.
Technology’s effect on the environment, for one, is a continuous talking point, as large enterprises and a society moving closer to the edge create a carbon footprint too big to ignore. Dell Technologies Inc. is looking to a more sustainable future with these concerns in mind, focusing on an environmental, social and governance (ESG) approach to its future innovations.
“Our vision is to be the most essential technology company for the data era,” said JJ Davis (pictured), chief corporate affairs officer of Dell. “ESG is embedded in all of that because the future is more sustainable, built by people that represent our customer base with a workforce that is more diverse and a workplace that is more inclusive.”
Davis spoke with industry analysts Lisa Martin and Dave Vellante at the Dell Technologies World event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed Dell’s application of ESG, its future goals, its annual ESG report, and more. (*Disclosure below.)
With Dell’s approach to ESG, there are four main priorities: climate, a circular economy, a diverse workplace and digital inclusion. With these pillars holding up their strategies, Dell is committed to being net-zero across scopes one, two and three emissions by 2050.
“When we think about our customers, 95% of our big customer request for proposals ask about sustainability and our commitment and what we’ll be doing to help them because they’re going to be reliant on technology to meet their sustainability and climate goals, whether it’s green IT or IT for green, and they’re going to be looking to us to help them,” Davis said.
Social issues are another hot topic issue today as more businesses are expanding their workforce to include a more diverse population. Even having the ability to work remotely opens doors for several eligible employees previously unable to commute to offices.
“A lot of people are coming to work for us because we are very measured in where we weigh-in and what we stand for and how we speak out. It’s a big part of our DNI strategy as well and helps us attract and retain diverse talent. You can live and work wherever you want. Proximity to the headquarters is no longer criteria for advancement,” Davis said.
