PlanetScale takes MySQL to the next level with cloud-native capabilities and improved scalability

Since its release more than 25 years ago, MySQL has become one of the standards for database management, with its diverse compatibility and scalability making it popular with websites, especially eCommerce sites.

Even with all of MySQL’s capabilities, PlanetScale Inc. is looking to take it to the next level, leveraging its scalability and bringing it to a cloud-native database.

“When you’re first beginning your database journey, the furthest thing from your mind is how many CPUs do I need? How much memory do I need?” said Nick Van Wiggeren (pictured), vice president of engineering at PlanetScale. “What we want you to be able to do is get started on focusing on shipping your code — the same way that Lambda, Kubernetes and all other cloud-native technologies help people get done what they want to get done.”

Van Wiggeren spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Keith Townsend at the recent KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed backing up migrations, managing schema changes, improving MySQL security and more. (* Disclosure below.)

Scalability with peace of mind

Data security is at the front of an organization’s agenda, and PlanetScale took measures from the start to ensure its users’ data is as safe as possible, Van Wiggeren pointed out.

“From the very first day, the very first beta that we had, we knew not a single byte goes over the internet that’s not encrypted,” he said. “It’s encrypted at rest; we have audit logging, we do a ton internally as well to make sure that what’s happening to your database is something you can find out.”

PlanetScale also offers MySQL backup, as well as an “undo button” that allows users to undo migrations up to 30 minutes after the migration, reverting their schema with all data back to its original state, Van Wiggeren explained.

“If you don’t trust PlanetScale and want them in two different data centers on different mediums, you can add on your own backup tools that you have right to use now,” he said. “I’d like you to trust that PlanetScale has the backups as well. But if you want to keep doing that and run your own system, I recommend it. You never have too many backups.”
