Motive’s new AI Reefer Monitoring solution prevents unsafe temperature fluctuations

Fleet management software company Motive Technologies Inc. has expanded its offering in the food and beverage market with the launch today of a new artificial intelligence-driven Reefer Monitoring solution for refrigerated vehicles and trailers.

Reefer monitoring — reefer refers to refrigerated containers — helps prevent unsafe temperature fluctuations for shipments of perishable goods, reducing the number of rejected deliveries due to spoilage. Motive’s solution is designed to help businesses improve compliance with food transportation safety requirements and reduce costs related to reefer operations.

Motive’s Reefer Monitoring includes a new environmental sensor that remotely monitors real-time reefer temperature and humidity conditions. Using the capability, businesses can monitor fleet data on a single screen, including location, vehicle telematics and reefer insights.

The solution is said to make it possible to create reefer logs for any period on demand without the need to visit a service center, reducing cost, decreasing reefer downtime and improving the service that fleets can provide to customers. Motive Reefer Monitoring also assists fleets in complying with the Food Safety Modernization Act requirements.

“Delivering ice cream at -20° Fahrenheit when it’s 90° degrees outside requires us paying great attention to the conditions inside our reefers,” explained Marc Cain, transportation manager at Mayer Bros Apple Products. “Motive Reefer Monitoring enables us to set the report for every 15 minutes to ensure there are no issues with the load. Having this level of visibility saves us five to 10 hours per week in fleet manager productivity and prevents any spoilage.”

Alongside the launch of the new reefer monitoring product, Motive also announced a collaboration with Thermo King LLC, a maker of transport temperature control systems for trucks and trailers to enable monitoring of reefer telematics data from the Motive Fleet Dashboard. The integration helps to avoid any food spoilage and lowers the operating and maintenance cost of the reefer systems by proactively detecting any problems.

“Our new device and the partnership with Thermo King gives our customers a single location for managing their entire operations,” Jai Ranganathan, chief product officer at Motive, said in a statement. “Our strategy enables our customers to access and take actions on all of their vehicles and equipment, including refrigeration units, in a consolidated dashboard within our Automated Operations Platform.”

Motive, known as KeepTruckin Inc. until April, was last in the news in May when it raised $150 million in new funding to scale up its investment in artificial intelligence, expand its product suite into spend management and grow its enterprise capabilities. Investors in Motive include Insight Partners, Kleiner Perkins, Greenoaks Capital, IVP, GV, Index Ventures and Scale Venture Partners.
