A new approach to data management: Prioritizing ease of use and scale
One of the biggest pain points in enterprise computing is putting data in the hands of both the users and businesses.
Data intelligence company Collibra NV is addressing this issue by incorporating the ease of use and scale aspects into its solutions by providing fast access to the right data, according to Laura Sellers (pictured), chief product officer of Collibra, who said that company’s Data Marketplace offers an enhanced data shopping experience to businesses looking to easily find, understand and access data.
“As we look at what we’re announcing with these innovations of ease of use and scale, it’s really about making teams more productive in getting started with and the ability to manage data across the entire organization,” Sellers said. “What we’re announcing from our ease of use side of the world is first our Data Marketplace. This is the ability for all users to discover and access data quickly and easily shop for it.”
Sellers spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Dave Vellante at “Data Citizen’s 2022,” during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed why ease of use and scale are important elements in the data space and how Collibra makes them a reality. (* Disclosure below.)
An Amazon-like data shopping experience
By providing a data shopping experience that mimics that of Amazon, time to value is accelerated, according to Sellers. In addition, “the masses” are better able to easily access, comprehend and trust data.
“Having a consumer-grade experience, where users can quickly go in and find the data, trust that data, understand where the data’s coming from, and then be able to quickly access it, is the idea of being able to shop for it — just making it as simple as possible and really speeding the time to value for any of the business analysts, data analysts out there,” she said.
An influx of data technologies is part of what causes friction. Collibra tackles this challenge through new product innovations, including the ability to process data-quality operations in Snowflake and reap the benefits of managing data quality in the cloud without having to worry about egress charges and dependencies on Spark compute.
“We’re also introducing the ability to pushdown data quality into Snowflake; we’re just reducing friction,” Sellers added. “Another thing that we’re launching with that is what we call Collibra Protect. And this is that ability for users to be able to ingest metadata, understand where the PII data is, and then set policies up on top of it.”
Since ease of use is at the heart of Collibra, this provides users with trusted data for enhanced use cases. Therefore, the company’s new homepage focuses on this objective.
“The next thing that we’re also introducing is the new homepage; it’s really about the ability to drive adoption and have users find data more quickly,” she said. “So we’ve been very focused on richer experiences, a broader ecosystem of partners, as well as a platform that delivers performance, scale and security that our users and teams need and demand.”
Collibra also incorporates the ease of use aspect through the Workflow Designer, according to Seller, who said that it enhances scalability through automation.
“We’re also introducing what’s called Workflow Designer,” she stated. “It’s a big differentiator to be able to automate business processes. The designer is really about a way for more people to be able to create those workflows, collaborate on those workflows, as well as people to be able to easily interact with them.”
For a data-driven culture to materialize, analytics must come into play. Therefore, Collibra presents a system of data engagement for users to leverage different expertise, such as management and analytics, according to Sellers.
“One of the big pushes and passions we have at Collibra is to help with this data-driven culture that all companies are trying to create — and also helping with data literacy,” she noted. “With something like usage analytics, it’s really about driving adoption of the Collibra platform, understanding what’s working, who’s accessing it, what’s not.”
