High-performance computing accelerates new data storage solutions

Simplifying costs and allocating resources to more important aspects of a business helps drive success. Many organizations use a lot of power in their computing solutions; however, that can lead to higher costs. Budgeting resources more effectively can create more scalable solutions.

Pure Storage Inc. addresses this concern by shrinking two-thirds of its customers power budget, according to Justin Emerson (pictured), principal technical evangelist at Pure Storage.

“We can use like 90% less DRAM in our drives, which you know, everything uses,” he said. “Everything that you put in a drive uses power, it adds cost and all those things, and so that really gives us an efficiency edge over everybody else.”

Emerson spoke with theCUBE industry analysts John Furrier and Savannah Peterson at SC22, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how high-performance computing is accelerating new data storage solutions. (* Disclosure below.)

Creating simple storage solutions

Pure Storage creates simplified data solutions so clients can spend more time on mission-critical tasks. The company’s main goal is to make a lasting positive impact on customer operations, as well as mitigate data center emissions and overall carbon footprints. In September, the company announced that its FlashBlade storage platform consumed 67% less energy and emissions, according to Emerson. Artificial intelligence and machine learning play a significant role in bringing this vision to life.

I think they’re really great in terms of bringing the benefits of technology to more people in an automated way, because the challenge has always been bandwidth of how much a human can do,” Emerson explained.

This process wouldn’t be functional without unstructured data, he added. This starts with high-performance, high-throughput, highly scalable storage solutions in order to be able to process the data.

Pure Storage continues to figure out how to improve based on what works most efficiently. User experience remains a huge focus for the company, and without that knowledge, the company would not be able to make advances in areas like algorithms and transfer learning, according to Emerson.
