Snowflake debuts Telecom Data Cloud for carriers

Snowflake Inc. today debuted the Telecom Data Cloud, an offering designed to help network operators more easily store and process business information.

Telecom Data Cloud is the latest in a series of industry-specific offerings Snowflake has introduced in recent quarters. It earlier rolled out similar solutions for companies in the healthcare, financial services and manufacturing sectors, as well as other segments.

Snowflake’s industry-specific offerings combine its flagship cloud data platform with third-party software tools, datasets and consulting services from partners. It provides a different combination of third-party products for each industry that it targets.

The company’s new Telecom Data Cloud includes software tools from more than a half-dozen partners. One of them is ThoughtSpot Inc., a venture-backed startup with an analytics platform of the same name. Carriers that adopt the Telecom Data Cloud can use ThoughtSpot to visualize business information they store in Snowflake and run queries to find useful patterns.

Another analytics startup that has partnered with Snowflake on the Telecom Data Cloud is CartoDB Inc., which does business as Carto. Carriers can use Carto’s software to create maps that visualize geospatial information such as the location of cell towers. Amazon Web Services Inc., Salesforce.com Inc. and Informatica LLC are also among the partners offering support for the Telecom Data Cloud.

Alongside software tools, Snowflake’s new offering for network operators includes third-party datasets. Those datasets can be combined with a company’s internal business information to support analytics initiatives. As part of its platform, Snowflake provides multiple features that can help a company more easily process information from outside organizations.

Telecom Data Cloud offers access to datasets from customer analytics provider Flywheel Software Inc. and TransUnion LLC. Another Snowflake partner on the list is OneWeb LLC. OneWeb, which is also a Snowflake customer, operates an internet satellite constellation that generates 55 billion rows of data per day.

“The next wave of growth and innovation in the telecommunications industry will undoubtedly be powered by data and requires collaboration across businesses and industries,” said Phil Kippen, global head of industry for telecom at Snowflake. “Snowflake’s Telecom Data Cloud unlocks these opportunities by creating one unified platform, enabling secure data collaboration by connecting telecommunications service providers with a rich ecosystem of applications, data, and technology partners.”

Snowflake already has a significant presence in the telecommunications sector. The company’s cloud data platform is used by major carriers such as AT&T Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC, as well as other market players.
