Couchbase works with telcos to harness data out to the edge

With data being the lifeblood of enterprises, telcos are not being left behind.

Based on the high scale and expectations engulfing the telecom space, Couchbase Inc. works with operators to provide interactive experiences to users through data-centric applications, according to John Kreisa (pictured), chief marketing officer of Couchbase.

“They’re building mobile applications where they’re stretching it out to the edge, and you have to move the data to the edge,” he stated. “You have to have that capability to deliver that highly interactive experience to their customers or for their own internal use cases out to that edge. We’re seeing a lot of that with Couchbase and with our customers in telco.”

Kreisa spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Dave Vellante at MWC 2023, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how Couchbase enables telcos to build data-powered applications to drive unique user experiences. (* Disclosure below.)

Tackling edge connectivity woes

Since connectivity can be lost at the edge, Couchbase enables telcos to deliver fast and reliable services through its Sync Gateway solution, according to Kreisa, who said it includes a peer-to-peer sync.

“There’s not always connectivity, so they need to have the applications continue to run and then sync back once they have that connectivity,” he stated. “We have an autonomous sync capability that brings it back to the cloud once they get back to whether it’s a private network that they want to run over or if they’re doing it over a public Wi-Fi network. Different edge apps are communicating with each other and then, ultimately, communicating back to a central server.”

Given that applications are instrumental in driving innovation, Couchbase enhances developer productivity through open-source frameworks, according to Kreisa. This includes automatic syncing, which makes the developers’ work easier.

“Couchbase started in open source, continues to be based on open-source projects. And, of course, those are very developer-centric,” Kreisa stated. “We provide all the consistent APIs for developers to create those applications, whether it’s something on Couchbase Lite, which is our edge-based database, or how they can sync that data back.”
