Next-gen applications: KubeVirt simplifies Kubernetes and VM integration

To deliver next-gen applications, improving workload flows continues to take center stage in the enterprise world.

KubeVirt was devised to bring virtual machines to Kubernetes by enabling containers and VMs to run side by side, according to Fabian Deutsch (pictured, left), senior engineering manager of OpenShift virtualization at Red Hat Inc.

“KubeVirt is a community project,” Deutsch said. “KubeVirt allows you to run virtual machines and Kubernetes alongside pods … so it’s empowering Kubernetes to not only run container, but also enabling you to run virtual machines.”

Deutsch and Andrew Burden (right), principal technical writer at Red Hat, spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Savannah Peterson and Rob Strechay at the KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how KubeVirt makes Kubernetes and VMs work together. (* Disclosure below.)

KubeVirt takes the heavy lifting away

Gaining knowledge about multiple infrastructure stacks is cumbersome. KubeVirt eliminates the pain point of having expertise in both Kubernetes and VMs, according to Burden.

“Someone coming from traditional virtualization will have to learn Kubernetes, and potentially that’s a blocker for people,” he stated. “I think the fact that you have to know Kubernetes anyhow, regardless of VMs, it’s the point that makes KubeVirt so valuable.”

Kubernetes is an extensive platform that’s merging different workload types. As a result, it makes it easier to orchestrate containers and VMs are not being left behind, according to Deutsch.

“All the knowledge that you already have to build up for Kubernetes because you want to use Kubernetes can be reused for VMs as well — to a large extent,” he stated. “That’s the core idea of why we want to run VMs on Kubernetes.”
