Shift5 raises $33M more for its hardware observability platform

Shift5 Inc., a startup with a platform for monitoring complex hardware systems such as aircraft, today announced that it has secured $33 million in funding.

The capital was provided as an extension to a Series B round that Shift5 closed in February, bringing that round to $83 million in total. According to the startup, Moore Strategic Ventures led its latest raise. A number of other investors, including Booz Allen Ventures, Teamworthy Ventures and JetBlue Inc.’s venture capital arm, participated as well.

The raise comes about a month after Shift5 inked a technology partnership with JetBlue. The alliance focuses on using data from commercial planes’ avionics, or onboard electronics, to detect technical issues and cybersecurity risks.

Complex systems such as aircraft have built-in sensors that generate a significant amount of telemetry data. That information can be analyzed to find potential component malfunctions. Moreover, data from onboard sensors and computing equipment is useful for breach detection.

Shift5 offers a platform that can analyze data from military systems, commercial aircraft and trains to detect potential issues. For example, it could spot if one of a vehicle’s onboard electronic components is experiencing a malfunction. It’s also capable of detecting hacking attempts.

Transportation systems often contain not just one but multiple components that generate telemetry data. That can complicate analysis in some cases. If two aircraft subsystems generate diagnostics data in two different formats, the data may have to be reorganized before it can be processed.

Shift5 says its platform makes it easier to correlate information from different system components. According to the company, the platform can also ingest data from components made by different manufacturers. If it finds breach or malfunction indicators in the data, the software sends an alert to administrators.

Customers can optionally stream the collected data to external tools for further processing. According to the company, its platform can move data to third-party cybersecurity services, maintenance software and other applications.

Shift5 processed more than 37 billion data points for customers over the past year. In the same time frame, its installed base and annual recurring revenue more than doubled. Its platform is used by multiple branches of the U.S. military, as well as several commercial customers including a Fortune 500 airline.

“Gaining observability at the onboard OT level can transform not just real-time operations, but the resilience and safety of the commercial and military fleets that underpin national defense and the U.S. economy,” said co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Josh Lospinoso.

Shift5 will reportedly use the proceeds from its latest raise to hire more employees. Additionally, it plans to invest in product engineering initiatives and expand into new markets.
