A hybrid future: Seamlessness across cloud storage and backup solutions

The future of cloud is hybrid, where it meets end users wherever they are.

As companies race to embrace hybrid cloud, it falls on solutions providers to ensure seamlessness across storage, backup/recovery and compute, etc. — which are often spread across different providers.

Danny Allan (pictured), chief technology officer of Veeam Software Group GmbH, weighed in on his company’s efforts in this space, as well as its partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.

We have a very storied history with HPE, and we go to market very closely and effectively,” Allan said. “We have integrations with everything from their three prior series to Primera. “We can send data using Catalyst to their StoreOnce — so long and deep integrations. Version 12, which we announced earlier this year, had some unique abilities that took advantage of what they offer. We had the ability to send data directly to object storage rather than tiering it through block storage.”

Allan spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Dave Vellante and Rob Strechay at HPE Discover, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed Veeam positioning itself as the go-to storage and backup solution for the enterprise hybrid cloud. (* Disclosure below.)

Expanding to protect containerized workloads

In 2020, Veeam acquired Kasten, a leader in data backup, mobility and disaster recovery for Kubernetes. It was a move intended to expand the company’s scope into containerization. Three years on, HPE Ezmeral users are seamlessly utilizing Kasten K10 for data protection, according to Allan.

“When we move to containers, people forget, ‘Oh, you know what? I should secure my containers, and I need to back up my containers.’ So we’re early stages in containers. I actually think we’re crossing the chasm this year in terms of adoption,” he said.

As Kubernetes trudges further into the mainstream, especially from a platform engineering viewpoint, Veeam is seeing success particularly with platform operations use cases, Allan added.

“We’re seeing the emergence of this new type of IT that are running the platforms,” he said. “They do understand about data protection. And we’re getting great success as well cross selling — we have 450,000 customers. We go back to those customers, and we can cross sell — whether it be Microsoft 365 or Kubernetes or AWS or Azure, any of the cloud platforms.”
