Even though the cloud offers scalability, predictable cost and automation, what happens when applications are not cloud ready?

Since the main gaming system used to operate the lottery was not cloud ready because it had to stay on-prem, HPE GreenLake enabled Western Canada Lottery Corp, to do a big refresh on its compute and spin up new environments, according to Adam Janssens (pictured, right), director of infrastructure and operations at WCLC.

“We’ve been an HPE customer for many, many years,” he said. “Talking to our HP solution architect, they mentioned the GreenLake model, and it really was appealing for us because it’s the cloud-like, pay-as-you-go type. You can get as much as you need — so consumption-based model.”

They discussed how HPE GreenLake enables WCLC to attain a hybrid-cloud environment for seamless operations in the new cloud era. (* Disclosure below.)

The need for hybrid computing

Some enterprises are in dire need of a hybrid-cloud environment because they must run some applications both on-premises and in the cloud. HPE GreenLake makes this a reality by bringing disparate pieces together, offering out-of-the-box experiences and abstracting the complexity from users, according to Lall.

“The value proposition they’re looking for is, ‘How do I get into a hybrid workplace?’” he said. “What happens with GreenLake is we are leveraging a bunch of modular building blocks that are optimized for workloads. What that does is provide for performance levels that are much better than in private cloud. What we’ve done with GreenLake is we leverage a very open system, open-standard approach so that we are not locking in customers into very specific services.”

Operating its lottery business in the three Canadian provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, WCLC needed an infrastructure refresh. As a result, HPE GreenLake has allowed the corporation to smooth out uncertainty and predictability, as well as manage data centers, according to Janssens.

“We’ve just recently moved one data center to a colo; we’re using Equinix,” he stated. “We explored GreenLake through Equinix. We’re also looking at Zerto to protect our data and our workloads. With our second data center, we’re moving to Toronto, which is 1,200 miles or 2,000 kilometers away from where we have any computers, like technical staff. So GreenLake Management Services is a perfect platform for us.”
