Data integration revolution: Transforming cybersecurity for the digital age

In today’s digital landscape, cybersecurity has become a critical concern for organizations across industries.

As cyber threats continue to evolve and grow in sophistication, the need for robust security measures is more crucial than ever. One key aspect that has emerged as a game-changer in the cybersecurity realm is data integration. By consolidating security data and breaking down silos, organizations can gain a comprehensive understanding of their security posture and take proactive measures to mitigate risks.

“The ability to bring all the data together, breaking the silos of cybersecurity, that’s the big trend,” said Omer Singer (pictured, right), head of cybersecurity strategy at Snowflake Inc. “Platforms are emerging to consolidate cybersecurity and data is a primary form of consolidation.”

Singer was joined by Nico Popp (left), chief product officer of Tenable Inc., as they spoke with industry analysts Dave Vellante and Lisa Martin at Snowflake Summit, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the transformative potential of data integration in cybersecurity and the partnership between Tenable and Snowflake. (* Disclosure below.)

The realization of cybersecurity as a data game

The major trend in the industry is the realization that cybersecurity is essentially a data problem, according to Popp. As cyber risks continue to escalate, organizations are recognizing the need to manage these risks effectively. This realization has led to a paradigm shift where data integration plays a crucial role. By bringing together diverse sources of security data, organizations can break the silos that hinder effective cybersecurity practices.

Tenable, a leader in vulnerability management, focuses on proactive security rather than reactive measures. With a vast customer base and a strong reputation, Tenable provides insights into vulnerabilities across an organization’s attack surface. This includes vulnerabilities present in cloud environments, OT systems, supply chains and more.

Tenable’s offering, Tenable One, powered by Snowflake, aims to consolidate security data from various sources, enabling better prioritization, contextualization and remediation of vulnerabilities.

“We are a leader in vulnerability management, which is kind of the essence of proactive security,” Popp said. “We have 50,000 customers, a lot of trust. That’s the idea behind Tenable One, powered by Snowflake is we can consolidate a lot of these logos and the platform is the data.”

The role of Snowflake in data consolidation

Snowflake, a leading data cloud platform, acts as a key enabler for Tenable’s data integration efforts. The partnership allows Tenable to consolidate its customers’ security data and seamlessly combine it with third-party data from other security vendors.

By leveraging Snowflake’s capabilities, Tenable eliminates the need for building complex data plumbing, enabling faster and more efficient analysis of security data. This collaboration empowers organizations to gain a unified view of their security posture and make informed decisions to mitigate risks, according to Popp.

The integration of Tenable’s vulnerability management with Snowflake’s data cloud platform provides significant benefits for security operations teams. By accessing enriched data and context, SecOps teams can prioritize their activities, remediate vulnerabilities effectively and avoid false positives. Additionally, compliance teams can leverage Snowflake’s data-driven approach to automate and streamline compliance processes, moving away from manual and time-consuming practices.

“I think … tackling the cybersecurity skills shortage is so important,” Singer said. “That’s when we hear announcements around generative AI and LLMs coming to the platform. Being supported within the data cloud. Hopefully, we can do a better job as a whole of protecting the company.
