New Beyond Identity tool helps UX teams understand, plan and optimize user authentication
Passwordless multifactor authentication startup Beyond Identity Inc. today announced a new European Union General Data Protection Regulation-compliant tool that helps development and user experience teams understand, plan and optimize different user authentication experiences.
Call “The Passkey Journey,” the free tool solves key challenges around passkey adoption and offers clarity into the pain of user interface inconsistencies across browsers and devices with just a few lines of code. Passkeys provide an easy-to-use authentication alternative to passwords that allow users to use biometrics, such as fingerprints, facial identification or a PIN or pattern.
Passkeys are key pairs tied to a user account and a registered website or app, but the emerging alternative to traditional passwords has issues: The ability to use passkeys can depend on the browsers and devices people are on and whether they support the WebAuthn protocol. According to Beyond Identity, the complexity of browser support for passkeys has created blind spots for development teams in terms of user interface impact, implementation lift and passkey deployment strategy.
The Passkey Journey is said to provide a short JavaScript snippet that can be integrated into a website. It analyzes browsers and devices being used by website visitors to determine WebAuthn support and provides a dynamic report of the user base’s ability to use passkeys.
With the service, developers, product managers, user interface designers and product security engineers gain access to a detailed breakdown of the percentage of website visitors that can use passkeys with biometrics, with only security keys, or cannot use passkeys at all. The report also shows clickable user interface flows to provide context for each scenario and provides deployment recommendations to optimize the rollout of passkeys.
“Passkeys present a pivotal moment in authentication, offering a frictionless and secure answer to the persistent challenges of user authentication,” Jasson Casey, chief technology officer of Beyond Identity, said in a statement. “But with platforms quickly evolving, development teams face the challenge of solving for inconsistent user experiences across browsers and devices.”
The Passkey Journey is available now and does not require an account or cade to use.
Beyond Identity was last in the news in December when it introduced new integration offerings with cloud cybersecurity company Zscaler Inc. to strengthen zero-trust architecture and reduce attack surfaces. The integration provides enterprises with continuous identity and device inspection and verification, enabling the real-time exchange of risk signals.
