New business VPN from Proton offers advanced security

Proton AG, the Swiss-based security services provider that has been known for its encrypted email product, today announced an update to its virtual private network product line, called Proton VPN for Business.

The news includes new features and new pricing packages that will make it more attractive, particularly for smaller businesses. The company claims to have 50,000 customers. Its VPN service was launched six years ago and originally designed for individuals.

Businesses must make sure that all of their assets are as secure as possible as they navigate the new hybrid and remote work environments, the company said in its announcement. The main addition is a Private Gateway service that can be quickly set up and deployed. Designed for business users, the VPNs also support more granular feature configuration that can be customized for groups of users.

Proton tries to strike the right balance between having high security standards and maintaining its users’ privacy. Its VPN passes traffic through multiple servers across a server network of more than 3,000 servers in 60 countries. There are adware blockers, a smart protocol called Stealth that automatically chooses the best-performing connection, and support for both WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols.

All of the VPN code is available via open source, and the company doesn’t keep any user data or traffic logs. Its most recent independent security audit was updated last month, with no issues identified.

The new business service has four different pricing plans, ranging from its Essentials plan starting at $8.99 per user per month and custom enterprise plans which include dedicated servers to a single business which also support a fixed internet protocol address.. Private Gateway servers cost $49.99 per server per month. There are quantity discounts available for longer purchase terms. VPN clients are available for all five endpoint operating systems — Mac, Windows, Linux, Android and iOS — and there’s support for Chrome, Firefox, Android TV and Chromebooks.
