BIG DATA

Efficient data movement and storage for disaster recovery

Many companies have come to recognize data management as a crucial skill integral to daily operations and are actively enhancing data management capabilities through the adoption of a systematic approach. The importance of having a robust data protection strategy cannot be overstated, particularly in the context of recovering from disruptive incidents, such as ransomware attacks.

A notable example of success in this regard is PrimaryIO Inc., which achieved its competitive edge by early collaboration with VMware Inc. and the utilization of vSphere APIs for IO filtering. This strategic partnership empowered PrimaryIO Inc. to develop innovative algorithms that selectively capture the high-priority data set, resulting in highly efficient data movement and storage solutions, exemplifying the significance of proactive data management and protection strategies in today’s data-driven world.

“We initially started as a migration platform for VMware workload,” said Lorenzo Salhi (pictured, left), founder and chief executive officer of PrimaryIO. “We were able to move VMs or applications to the cloud at a fraction of the time, like any other product. From a migration technology, we started looking into disaster recovery, disaster recovery as a service. And as you know, the recent activities in the ransomware space.”

Salhi and Mike Kail (right), chief technology officer of PrimaryIO, spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Lisa Martin and John Furrier at VMware Explore 2023, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed ransomware attacks, potential recovery and solutions PrimaryIO offers. (* Disclosure below.)

Adopting a systems thinking approach

To recover from ransomware incidents and successfully architect a multicloud environment, customers need to adopt a systems thinking approach and implement a comprehensive data protection strategy, Kail said.

“You can’t recover from a ransomware incident unless you’re protecting your data,” he added. “You have to have a comprehensive data protection strategy. Which is why our product ProtectIO … our disaster recovery as a service platform … as one of the top five announcements here from IBM.”

Being able to identify and address instances of data encryption plays a role in thwarting ransomware attacks and circumventing the necessity of paying ransom or relying on cyber insurance, thus mitigating the risk of data loss. This underscores the significance of intelligence-driven solutions for businesses that PrimaryIO offers to customers, according to Salhi

“Unlike other tools in the marketplace, we’re just not a license that … a customer has to do themself or they probably would have to find a professional service to do it. It’s all in-house. From discovery to migration to disaster, recovery, managed service,” he concluded.
