New Fortanix features help address growing data sovereignty requirements

Intel Corp.-backed multicloud security firm Fortanix Inc. today announced new capabilities for its Data Security Manager that help public and private organizations address growing data sovereignty requirements globally.

The new and existing features in Fortanix DSM deliver several key capabilities. They include support for sovereign cloud, key storage in sovereign boundaries, anonymization of private data, and centralized control to manage access and enforce consistent policies across hybrid and multicloud environments.

Sovereignty requirements in data security are the laws and regulations that govern the collection, storage, processing and sharing of data within a specific jurisdiction. Complying with the multitude of requirements across the globe is a major challenge for organizations.

With the new features, Fortanix is attempting to make it easier for companies to ensure compliance over sensitive data while bolstering security. The Fortanix DSM offering can be provisioned within customers’ sovereign regions, enabling them to have a dedicated solution that meets regulations in their legislative jurisdictions.

Key DSM data sovereignty capabilities include full control over key generation and lifecycle management for hybrid, multicloud environments with natively integrated key management service and the Federal Information Process Standard 140-2 Level 3 HSM. The service has the ability to store encryption keys separate from data and within sovereign regions.

DSM includes enforced least privileged data access with role-based access control and Quorum Controls to support zero-trust architecture. Built-in crypto agility offers migration to the latest approved quantum-proof cryptographic algorithms, and format-preserving encryption anonymizes sensitive data at ingestion or creation before sharing across pipelines and workflows to keep it private, usable and compliant, the company says.

Native database encryption in Fortanix DSM manages and stores the keys required to encrypt all databases, including Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB, Postgres, MySQL, Maria DB and IBM DB2, and a joint VMware Inc. and Fortanix solution is also available for scalable data protection and compliance for VMware Sovereign cloud environments.

“Data sovereignty goes beyond just where data resides; it is a multilayered approach that encompasses data security, protection and privacy,” Faiyaz Shahpurwala, chief product and strategy officer at Fortanix, noted ahead of the announcement.
