Data reshaped: HPE’s AI-enhanced storage for the modern enterprise

At the forefront of technological innovation, the convergence of artificial intelligence, storage solutions and hybrid cloud is reshaping the landscape of enterprise computing.

As AI disrupts industries and becomes an integral part of modern enterprises, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. is leading the way with solutions designed to empower organizations in harnessing the full potential of AI.

“AI is disrupting everything at this point,” said Patrick Osborne (pictured), senior vice president and general manager of hybrid cloud data storage at HPE. “What we found is that for the customers that are doing AI native and this type of application development, they need a new level of performance scale.”

Osborne spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Rob Strechay and Rebecca Knight at the HPE Discover Barcelona event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the AI revolution and navigating the hybrid cloud challenges it presents. (* Disclosure below.)

AI revolutionizing the storage industry

AI is not just a buzzword, but a transformative force that is reshaping how businesses manage and utilize data, according to Osborne.

“Oftentimes we have customers that say, ‘Hey, I’ve got 40% growth in my Kubernetes environment, but I don’t know how to map my application developers to how much storage they’re using,’” he said. “It’s a lot of things that we solved in the ModeOne application world that are now coming up very quickly in this AI-driven enterprise world as well too.”

This makes AI-native application development and the need for enhanced performance and scalability in the storage layer to support AI workloads even more important, Osborne emphasized.

HPE’s announcement of GreenLake for File Storage, an unstructured data platform delivered through the GreenLake Cloud platform, showcases the company’s commitment to providing solutions that meet the demands of AI-driven enterprises.

“For AI workloads, the conversation usually starts with a data conversation,” Osborne said. “The first step is creating that data lake and sort of doing a lot of data prep, understanding what you’re doing. You can start off fairly small and scale into the petescale, not only from a capacity perspective but from a performance scale.”

Navigating the AI journey

AI adoption is a diverse landscape, with organizations at various stages of their AI journey. From those just starting with small-scale systems for testing and tuning to large enterprises dealing with petabytes of data and terabytes per second throughput, HPE’s hybrid cloud solutions cater to a wide range of needs, according to Osborne.

“From an adoption perspective, [organizations] want to use their data centers or a well-known co-location environment partner,” he said. “At the end of the day, AI data sets have a huge amount of gravity to them, and you want to bring the workloads to that.”

Many organizations face challenges when deploying AI workloads, including cost efficiency, security and data sovereignty, Osborne added.

HPE’s approach involves providing companies with reference architectures, expert advisory services and an automated platform that abstracts infrastructure complexities, allowing organizations to focus on data and desired outcomes.

“That’s why we provide all of these data services that are abstracted from the physical storage to be able to provide movement of data placement,” he said. “That’s been very successful for us.”
