Qlik buys data-as-a-product startup Mozaic Data

Data integration company QlikTech International AB said today it has closed on another acquisition, snapping up the artificial intelligence-powered data-as-a-product startup Mozaic Data for an undisclosed fee.

According to Qlik, the deal is a timely acquisition that will allow it to simplify the way businesses handle information, and ensure better data quality and governance.

Mozaic is best known for its Data Product Experience Platform, which is based on decentralized architecture. With its platform companies can build, secure, govern, deploy and manage domain-centric data products in the cloud. Those products can be discovered easily through its data product marketplace, and accessed via a range of consumption models to enable diverse business use cases.

Qlik is led by its Chief Executive Mike Capone, who has spearheaded an ongoing effort to boost the company’s presence in areas such as data integration, data quality and data analytics, making multiple acquisitions over the past five years. One of its most recent deals was the acquisition of the data quality platform provider Talend Inc., which closed in May.

By buying Mozaic Data, Qlik says, it intends to accelerate data deployment and utilization across cloud infrastructure platforms such as Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, Microsoft Fabric, Databricks and Snowflake. It will allow the company to treat data as a product, which is an approach that can speed up the implementation of new, data-centric use cases by 90%, while reducing the total cost of data ownership by 30%, according to a recent study published in the Harvard Business Review.

Qlik will integrate Mozaic’s tools into its wider data management platform, enabling its customers to manage their data as a product and increase their pace of innovation, it said. It’s an approach that analysts believe will go down well with customers.

“Organizations are increasingly seeking to create domain-centric data products that transcend data integration and quality, and there’s an elevated expectation within the industry,” said International Data Corp. analyst Stewart Bond. “The focus of Qlik’s data quality and governance offerings to embody the concept of data products highlights a maturity that resonates with today’s customer needs.”

Mozaic Data founder Sharad Kumar will join Qlik as its new regional head of data integration and quality. In that role, he will spearhead Qlik’s effort to create a next-generation data product catalog that will help customers to squeeze more value out of their information. “We share a vision to improve data consumption by maximizing value from data investments,” Kumar said.

Qlik Data Business Unit General Manager Drew Clarke said the company’s customers already recognize the need to treat data as a product. “[It is] a strategy that aligns with the need for a SaaS-based data product catalog, offering a more efficient and user-friendly experience in data lifecycle management,” he said.
