Apple opens pre-orders for the Vision Pro mixed reality headset

Pre-orders for Apple Inc.’s much-anticipated mixed reality Vision Pro headset opened today for customers in the United States, making the company’s first “spatial computer” available to order for $3,499 on the company’s website.

In addition to opening pre-orders, Apple revealed full tech specs for the device and accessories for the Vision Pro.

To pre-order the device, users will need an iPhone or iPad with Face ID. This is because users will need to scan their face twice so that Apple can know the sizing information for the Vision Pro’s light seal and headbands. During the scanning process users will be asked to look up, down, left and right.

As previously announced, the Vision Pro headset ships with a Solo Knit Band and Dual Loop Band, a light seal, two cushions for the light seal, a cover, a polishing cloth, a battery pack, a USB-C charging cable and USB-C power adapter.

In addition, users who wear glasses can purchase Zeiss Optical inserts Readers for $99 or inserts based on a prescription from a doctor for $149.

Apple has also revealed a $199 official travel case that comes with a retractable handle, with compartments inside designed to hold the battery, Zeiss inserts, cover, and other accessories. The entire case is made of a white ripstop outer shell and built over a polycarbonate structure to prevent it from being crushed. Additional batteries for the Vision Pro cost $199.

The starting cost of the Vision Pro is $3,499 beginning with 256 gigabytes of storage. With pre-orders available, Apple also revealed two additional configurations, a $3,699 version with 512 gigabytes and another at $3,899 with 1 terabyte of storage.

As for the device’s internals, Apple confirmed that company’s M2 chip will power the device with an eight-core central processing unit and a 10-core graphical processing unit, along with 16 gigabytes of unified memory. This will help drive the device’s 12 cameras, five sensors and six microphones that will provide the device’s hallmark capability of visual passthrough known as “mixed reality.” This will allow users to see the world around them while apps and interactable experiences are overlaid virtually onto what they can see.

The headset’s displays are capable of driving 23 million pixels using micro-OLED displays. The panels support refresh rates from 90Hz, 96Hz and 100Hz. The headset can also use AirPlay to mirror up to 1080p video to iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV or AirPlay-enabled smart TVs.

According to Apple, the headset will weigh between 1.3 and 1.4 pounds, depending on which Light Seal and head band is used on the device. This makes the device slightly heavier than its main competitor the Meta Quest 3 from Meta Platforms Inc., which weighs in at 1.1 pounds. The separate battery pack weighs 0.78 pounds.

Pre-orders opened earlier today and the device will ship for customers in the United States on Friday, Feb. 2.
