Leveraging data to combat domestic abuse: The National Map of Gender Violence in Brazil

Since data is the stepping stone toward better decision-making, tackling weighty societal issues, such as domestic violence, require a data-based approach. The National Map of Gender Violence in Brazil is one compelling example of this premise.

Given that 60-70% of women in Brazil aged 16 and older face gender-based violence, the Brazilian Federal Senate partnered with the Avon Institute and QlikTech International AB to combat this issue using advanced data integration technologyaccording to Beatriz Accioly (pictured, left), head of partnerships at Avon.

Avon’s Beatriz Accioly and Marcos Ruben de Oliveira from the Brazilian Senate talk to theCUBE about the importance of the National Map of Gender Violence in Brazil.

“We have brought here to the event the National Map of Gender Violence,” Accioly said. “It’s a platform that unifies the majority of public information and data on violence against women in Brazil. We partner up to put together the most comprehensive and up-to-date tool so that all sorts of professionals can access data with quality. With Qlik and embedded features and our partners, we were able to create a very beautiful visual setting.”

Accioly spoke with theCUBE’s Savannah Peterson and Shelly Kramer at Qlik Connect, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed how data is helping tackle the gender-based violence issue in Brazil. (* Disclosure below.)

Qlik’s technology is at the heart of the National Map of Gender Violence

To tell Brazil’s domestic abuse story in a compelling way, the National Map of Gender Violence leverages Qlik’s data visualization prowess and robust architecture. As a result, data about this important issue is made accessible and visually attractive since it’s often treated as a private matter, Accioly pointed out.

“Brazil has staggering numbers of violence against women, but it’s not that easy to find that information,” she said. “Six in each 10 do not report it to the services. This is something that we have brought with the map that’s very important to shed a light on. We started working on the map, and it became clear that Qlik was a very good solution for us.”

To have a clearer picture about gender-based violence in Brazil, the National Research on Violence Against Women is conducted every two years, which has been taking place since 2005. As a result, the data gathered offers better remedies, according to Ruben de Oliveira.

“Each two years, we do a survey with just women in Brazil by cell phone,” he said. “We do around 50 minutes of questionnaires, and we ask dedicated questions. We can collect a lot of information this way.”
