Navigating hybrid cloud: Zerto’s integration with HPE’s virtualization platforms

When Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. acquired Zerto Ltd. for $374 million in 2021, the expectation was that the venture-backed startup would help enterprise customers implement speedy data recovery solutions and protect workloads against lengthy outages in a data-driven world.

Chris Schin, VP at HPE, and Matt Boris, VP at Zerto, talk about data recovery with theCUBE at HPE Discover.

“Where we really fit is in the resume and recoverability,” said Matt Boris (pictured, right), vice president of go-to-market global sales at Zerto, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company. “What we’re seeing is that most of the customers out there rely on traditional backup technology. But when you rely on that technology … people are down from six to eight weeks. The solutions we’re offering today are talking about recovering in seconds or minutes.”

Boris spoke with theCUBE Research’s Dave Vellante and Rebecca Knight at HPE Discover, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. He was joined by Chris Schin (left), vice president and general manager of data protection at HPE, and they discussed data recovery solutions, Zerto’s role in the hybrid cloud and a growing need for regulatory compliance. Zerto integrates data recovery solutions with virtualization platforms

Zerto’s role in the HPE portfolio of products has evolved since the acquisition, more recently as an element in the company’s announcement this week of a new virtualization capability for HPE Private Cloud. The solution seamlessly integrates with HPE’s hybrid cloud services, including Zerto’s data protection and cyber resiliency offerings.

“What was once a very consolidated industry is fragmenting rapidly,” Schin said. “We as a data protection vendor have to adopt to that reality, and that’s what we’re doing in the market today. With Zerto, we have the ability to go from and to any combination — VMware, Hyper-V, AWS cloud and Azure cloud. We already have a fair number of options covered, but we’re going to continue doubling down on that.”

Zerto’s offering is also designed to help customers deal with compliance, an increasingly important consideration for companies seeking to do business in Europe, according to Boris.

“The regulations make it really clear, and they are more European focused today … that customers have to pay fines if they can’t actually do certain things,” Boris said. “These regulations are driving change in Europe, but if you are a U.S. company that wants to do any business in Europe, you are affected by them now.”
