Synology launches ActiveProtect unified backup solution for enterprises

Network-attached storage and protection solutions provider Synology Inc. today announced the launch of ActiveProtect, a new line of data protection appliances designed to provide enterprises with a unified backup solution that offers simplicity, security and scalability.

ActiveProtect integrates backup software, servers and backup repositories into a unified platform to allow businesses to secure their data while minimizing the complexities and costs typically associated with enterprise backup systems.

The new appliances include a unified, all-in-one solution that streamlines backup, recovery and management into a single appliance. The idea is that by eliminating the need for separate hardware, software and maintenance, businesses gain a consolidated platform that reduces overhead and simplifies information technology operations.

ActiveProtect offers coverage across multiple platforms to ensure security for PCs, Macs, virtual machines, databases, file servers and Microsoft 365 accounts. The appliances support the widely recommended 3-2-1-1-0 backup strategy that guarantees data security and recoverability. A built-in hypervisor additionally allows users to test backups, while an intuitive interface consolidates all management tasks into a unified dashboard for greater ease of use, according to the company.

Scalability is another key focus of ActiveProtect, with the ActiveProtect Manager console supporting up to 150,000 workloads or 2,500 sites. The centralized dashboard offers enterprise-grade visibility and control to allow IT teams to monitor and manage data protection at scale.

On the security front, ActiveProtect includes features and support for immutable backups, air-gap capabilities and compliance support to defend against evolving cyber threats. Additionally, the appliance also offers global source-side deduplication to minimize storage and network demands while enabling fast, incremental backups.

“Data protection should not be an obstacle to business success. It should help enable success,” Jia-Yu Liu, executive vice president at Synology. “ActiveProtect is the culmination of two decades of experience in hardware and software engineering, shaped by our ongoing collaboration with businesses worldwide and more than half of Fortune 500 companies.”

ActiveProtect is being offered as a onetime purchase without recurring costs. Businesses can manage up to three backup servers license-free, with optional CMS licenses available for larger, multi-appliance deployments.
