Prowler raises $12.5M to advance its open-source driven cloud security platform

Open cloud security platform startup ProwlerPro Inc. announced today that it has raised $12.5 million in new funding to advance product innovation to redefine cloud security to be more open, adaptable and community-focused.

Prowler began as an open-source project on GitHub in 2016 that was developed by former Amazon Web Services Inc. security engineer Toni de la Fuente. The project initially provided security assessments for AWS environments before expanding to include support for other cloud platforms such as Azure, Google Cloud and Kubernetes.

The success and widespread adoption of the GitHub project led to the creation of Prowler as a company in 2023, with an aim to further develop and commercialize cloud security solutions.

Prowler offers a platform that allows organizations to perform security assessments, audits and continuous monitoring of their cloud environments. The company’s approach emphasizes transparency, adaptability and community collaboration to allow users to tailor security measures to their specific needs.

Prowler Cloud, the company’s main solution, offers continuous monitoring, automated compliance checks and detailed security insights on a software-as-a-service basis through customizable dashboards and reports. The platform is designed for teams seeking a user-friendly solution without deep cloud security expertise, simplifying the process of securing cloud environments.

Along with its security offering, Prowler actively supports the Open Cloud Security movement, which advocates for integrating openness, transparency and collaborative innovation into cloud security practices. The aim of the movement is to build a foundation of trust and resilience across global enterprises, public organizations, small businesses and individual users.

The seed funding round was led by Decibel VC, with SNR Ventures and individual seed investors also participating.

“This funding is a significant milestone for Prowler and the open cloud security movement,” said Chief Executive de la Fuente. “We are committed to ushering in the open cloud security paradigm that will make safeguarding the digital future a reality. As cloud environments become more complex, organizations need flexible solutions that evolve with the threat landscape and without vendor lock-in.”
