New Relic strengthens software reliability with GitHub Copilot Coding Agent integration

Cloud observability platform provider New Relic Inc. today announced an integration with GitHub Copilot’s newly released agentic coding capability to provide development and operations teams faster time to incident response.

New Relic says the new feature provides cutting-edge, proactive monitoring, automated issue creation, expedited code repair, validation and resolution for GitHub Copilot.

Microsoft recently released the ability for GitHub Copilot to act as an asynchronous artificial intelligence developer partner directly integrated into the GitHub platform, allowing it to build, implement and write code at the behest of software engineers. This new feature, called GitHub Copilot Coding Agent, integrates agentic AI, a capability that allows AI applications to act independently without much human oversight and complete tasks independently.

Microsoft-owned GitHub is a web-based platform and cloud service used for version control and collaboration in software development. It’s a place where developers can store, share and work on code with others using a control system called Git. Millions of developers use it to control hundreds of millions of open-source and private enterprise codebases to facilitate teamwork to orchestrate projects in repositories.

“Agentic AI is poised to be a transformative technology for enterprise software developers and engineers, who are facing intense pressure to ship more innovations at a faster pace without sacrificing quality and reliability,” said New Relic Chief Product Officer Manav Khurana.

The New Relic Copilot coding agent integration will automatically detect performance issues in generated code stemming from changes. Upon identifying them, New Relic will pinpoint root causes to automatically create comprehensive GitHub issues, and provide all the related, necessary context for developers to fix anything arising from it.

After looking at the issue, a developer can decide if the context provided is sufficient to assign it to GitHub Copilot. Once assigned, Copilot can analyze the issue, draft a fix and then draft a pull request for human review. New Relic then validates the correction post-merge, completing the cycle.

“With the innovative integration of New Relic’s intelligent observability technology with GitHub Copilot coding agent, we are closing the loop on ensuring continued application health,” said Khurana.

New Relic said this method helps reduce the total time spent on issue resolution because it automates detection and validation processing to address issues faster. This will greatly improve developer productivity by quickly resolving performance issues, and letting developers get out of maintenance mode and back to building new features and app logic.

“Millions of organizations rely on GitHub every day for software delivery,” said Julia Liuson, president of the developer division at Microsoft. “Our integrations with key partners like New Relic are instrumental in making our tools that much more scalable, reliable and intelligent.”
