Cohesity's Sanjay Poonen describes the company's trajectory in the cybersecurity market following the Veritas acquisition. SECURITY

Following Veritas acquisition, Cohesity looks for further growth

Since Cohesity Inc. acquired Veritas Technologies LLC in 2024, the combined entity has been quick to answer on the changing needs of the cybersecurity market.

That include tools to combat the increasing amount of cyberattacks. In its partnership with Amazon Web Services Inc., Cohesity has enhanced its portfolio of security solutions with artificial intelligence and multicloud capabilities.

“We’ve always had that very special relationship with Amazon,” said Sanjay Poonen (pictured), chief executive officer of Cohesity. “We built that control plane and the first version of that hyperconverged stack running in Amazon, and we’ve kept a lot of that code with an AWS-first philosophy, and then just look to have more and more services that we’ve optimized for AWS, primarily around the data immutability, data protection.”

Poonen spoke with theCUBE’s John Furrier at the AWS & Ecosystem Leaders Halftime Report event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed Cohesity’s collaboration with AWS and how the cybersecurity space is evolving. (* Disclosure below.)

AI solutions enter the cybersecurity market

Cohesity was quick to infuse AI into its Data Cloud offering, which uses a clean room design environment to overcome cyberattacks. The enhancements include Gaia, an AI-powered cyber recovery assistant. The company is also continuing to improve upon its data recovery products within the AWS platform, according to Poonen.

“We built the world’s first cyber vault in AWS called FortKnox,” he said. “It’s basically an air gap archive that’s highly secure and can be disconnected from your network so that your first copy sits, for example on-prem, maybe on a Cohesity appliance. A second copy might sit in an archive that may be ours or another storage. The third and final copy sits in an air gap in a separate location in Amazon. We were the first to do that.

Cohesity hopes to build on this history of innovation in the cybersecurity market with its Veritas acquisition. Poonen calls the resulting entity a “cheetah and an elephant in one,” wherein Cohesity brings the speed of its cyber recovery and Veritas brings the scale and customer base.

“[It’s] product innovation on one side and customer obsession on the other side,” he said. “As we brought these two cultures together in Veritas, what I’ve sought to do is tell people who’ve come from the Veritas side, for example, it doesn’t matter that you’ve been around the industry longer, you have to now move at the speed of a $2 billion startup. That’s where we are headed towards in revenue.”

Poonen helps customers follow a five-step framework for cyber resilience, and that starts with them having the full picture of their workloads. By building connections throughout a business’s entire network, Cohesity is enabling its users to prevent attacks and recover faster.

“We build native connectors to as many of these workloads for a multi-cloud world, on-prem, public cloud, and not just AWS, the other public clouds too,” Poonen said. “And you have now one pane of glass where you can see all of your workloads to ensure you’ve got every workload power. We call that the first step to cyber resilience.”
