Apple introduces iPhone 17, Watch 11 and new AirPods Pro 3

Apple Inc. today introduced a new lineup of iPhone 17, including an ultra-thin model, new AirPods Pro and its next generation of Apple Watch.

In addition to the devices introduced at the company’s “Awe Dropping” event, Apple also introduced the A19 and A19 Pro custom silicon. The new chips will power the family of iPhone 17 smartphones.

Four new smartphone models for the iPhone 17 lineup

The new iPhone 17 continues Apple’s consistent curved design and supports a larger 6.3-inch display size. Alongside the new phone, the company also rolled out new 17 Pro and Pro Max and the ultra-thin iPhone Air.

The new phone models feature an upgraded Center Stage front camera that provides a wider field of view and uses the phone’s built-in AI capabilities. It has a higher resolution, up to 18 megapixels for photos, and allows users to take landscape and portrait photos without having to rotate their phone. The rear camera is a new type of “fusion camera” that integrates 2x telephoto and ultra-wide camera features into one aperture.

Powering the phone is the new A19, a custom silicon chip built with third-generation three-nanometer technology designed to provide high performance, efficiency and boost speed over the previous generation. With its high-efficiency capability, the new iPhone 17 has all-day battery life and can deliver up to 30 hours of playback per charge, eight more hours than the previous generation.

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max feature 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively, and enhance battery life further thanks to a larger battery combined with the efficiency of the A19 chip. Apple said iPhone Pro Max has the best battery life ever in an iPhone and both models charge 50% in 20 minutes with a high-wattage USB-C power adapter.

On board is the A19 Pro chip, which Apple claims is the “fastest CPU in any smartphone.” It provides an upgrade over A18, including a powerful graphical processing unit for superior graphics and AI acceleration with dedicated chips for machine learning.

Finally, the new iPhone Air, represented as the “thinnest iPhone ever,” comes in at a mere 5.6mm, thinner than the ultra-slim 6mm Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. Galaxy S25 Edge. The phone’s upcoming release was predicted by well-respected Apple analyst Mark Gurman back in January.

It has a very similar design profile to other iPhones, all fit within a 6.5-inch display, but the extremely low profile means that the iconic “camera bump” appears to stick out almost the same thickness as the phone.

In spite of the phone’s thin form factor, Apple said it is still capable of all-day battery life due to innovations in Adaptive Power Mode in iOS 26, software optimizations and the A19 chip.

Apple Watch Series 11, SE 3 and Pro 3

The Apple Watch Series 11, an iteration on the previous generation that includes more durable glass, also debuted today, featuring longer battery life and 5G cellular capabilities.

The addition of 5G provides greater coverage for users and increased battery efficiency. According to the company, the new Apple Watch receives up to 24 hours of battery life.

Series 11 ships with a large number of health features, including new updates for heart health and sleep. Using the watch’s optical heart sensor, the device can measure how blood flows through vessels under the skin. Using advanced machine learning, the watch can alert the user that their blood pressure has remained too high over a period of time, representing the possibility of hypertension.

“Hypertension is the leading preventable cause of heart attack and stroke, yet millions remain undiagnosed,” said Harlan Krumholz, MD, SM, a cardiologist and scientist at Yale University and Yale New Haven Hospital.

The watch now includes “sleep score,” a metric that takes into account how well people sleep through the night. Sleep quality is influenced by a number of factors detected by the watch, including duration, bedtime consistency, how often they wake up and how much time is spent in each sleep stage. The new sleep score provides an easy-to-understand breakdown of these elements to give users an idea of how they can improve their sleep.

A more affordable model, the new Apple Watch SE 3, also includes the same health options in addition to a new fast charging capability. The new watch charges up to 2x faster than the previous generation. A 15-minute charge can add up to eight hours, and it can charge about 80% in 45 minutes.

Apple Watch Ultra, billed as the ultimate adventure and sports watch, now has the Ultra 3 in its lineup. Yet again, Apple has made the watch face larger and easier to use with technological improvements, including a better display and a smaller bezel. Additionally, it comes with Satellite connectivity at double the signal strength, allowing users to communicate with satellites up to 800 miles away.

With a battery life of up to 42 hours, with up to 72 hours on low power mode, the watch will keep people connected to health and sports functions for a longer time.

Alongside the new watches, Apple introduced the AirPods Pro 3, which combine superior battery life and sound quality through noise cancellation technology.

The new AirPods Pro feature a specialized design that includes vents on the sides of the earbuds, enhancing the soundstage and overall audio quality. Additionally, they have improved active noise cancellation options, making them twice as effective as the previous generation.

Live translation, powered by Apple’s artificial intelligence platform Apple Intelligence, can now turn AirPods Pro into the fabled Babelfish, a fish-like creature that does universal translation, from Douglas Adams’ “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” Users can use them and receive a high-quality translation of multiple languages spoken in their native tongue.

A pair of people wearing the new earbuds get an even better experience as they can speak together in their own language and hear their partner’s speech translated in their ear.

Apple said the battery has also been extended to provide up to eight hours of music playback, a 33% increase over the previous generation.
