CoreStory launches AI-powered code intelligence platform to modernize legacy software

Code intelligence platform startup CoreStory launched today with an artificial intelligence-powered platform that turns legacy code into a strategic asset for continuous innovation.

The company is seeking to address what they called the “aging legacy application and system problem,” whereby enterprises are modernizing, managing and maintaining aging legacy software systems to adapt to digital, cloud-based infrastructures. CoreStory argues that many don’t have the documentation or blueprint of how an application was built.

CoreStory’s code intelligence platform is designed to uncover and expose the hidden business logic, requirements and structural designs embedded in legacy codebases. The company’s platform breaks down large codebases into more manageable units by applying advanced AI techniques such as recursive decomposition and recomposition and then reconstructs a validated, holistic view of the software system.

The process used by the company starts with generating what CoreStory calls an “Intelligence Model” of existing applications. The Intelligence Model captures business requirements, business rules, workflows, technical dependencies and architectural insights to become a queryable source of truth about how the system really works, which is valuable when documentation is missing or outdated.

The platform supports several critical use cases, covering both legacy apps and application maintenance.

For legacy app modernization, the platform allows organizations to understand existing systems well enough to migrate, refactor or re-architect with confidence. For application maintenance and extension, the platform assists teams in more effectively navigating codebases, understanding dependencies and making safe changes without unintended regressions.

CoreStory’s platform also supports AI-generated code while addressing the risks of black-box systems. By integrating newly generated code, whether produced by AI assistants or large language models, into its Intelligence Model, the platform eliminates blind spots and preserves clarity to ensure that future teams can easily understand the original intent behind the code, not just the final output.

“Traditionally, modernization projects were conducted by experts who reviewed the code line-by-line, which typically takes 18 months or longer,” said founder and Chief Executive Anand Kulkarni. “Our AI-based approach allows these companies to rethink the requirements in the code and applications, adding in more functionality and features. CoreStory lowers the barriers to entry and provides enterprises with radical savings.”

Though CoreStory is officially launching today, the company was formerly known as Crowdbotics Inc. In a post on LinkedIn, the company said that the rebrand “isn’t just a new name — it’s a reflection of our mission and vision. The new name captures what we do best: uncovering the core story hidden inside every codebase and turning it into actionable intelligence that accelerates innovation.”

CoreStory has raised $68 million over four rounds, according to data from Tracxn, including a round of $40 million in January 2023. Investors in the company include New Enterprise Associates Inc., Harrison Metal Capital, Jackson Square Ventures, The House Fund, Homebrew and Cooley LLP.
