Coder secures $90M investment to optimize development environments

Coder Technologies Inc., a startup that makes it easier for software teams to create development environments, has raised $90 million in a Series C funding round.

The company announced the investment today. It stated that the cash infusion, which was led by KKR with participation from existing backers, follows a year in which its bookings grew threefold.

When developers launch a new software project, they must download not only a code editor but also numerous other tools. Moreover, they usually install additional assets such as application modules created by colleagues. Those components must all be configured in a specific way to work reliably.

Developers usually install the technical assets needed for a software project on their local computers, which creates certain challenges. The first is that setting up the necessary components can take hours. The other is that the configuration of those components often varies across developer machines, which can lead to technical issues. When workstation configurations are inconsistent, a piece of code that works on one developer’s computer might not run well on colleagues’ machine.

Coder has developed an open-source tool of the same name that addresses those challenges. It enables companies to replace local development environments with a centralized, cloud-based sandbox. A centralized sandbox removes the configuration inconsistencies that can emerge when each developer must manually create a local environment.

The company says its approach also provides other benefits. The cloud offers access to more computing capacity than developer workstations, which makes it possible to speed up tasks such as compiling code. Additionally, the fact that code is kept in a centralized development environment makes it easier to secure than assets scattered across multiple workstations.

Coder provides a tool called Mux that can run artificial intelligence coding agents in users’ development environments. The tool, which is also open-source, enables multiple agents to work side by side. It creates an isolated workspace for AI automation workflows to mitigate cybersecurity risks.

The startup makes money from its open-source tools with a paid version that includes additional cybersecurity features. Administrators can restrict which MCP servers and tools a development team’s AI agents may use. It’s also possible to define more granular controls, such as a rule that regulates what websites an agent may visit while performing online research.

Coder’s paid version generates an audit log that administrators can use to monitor AI agent activity. Another management tool makes it possible to cap development-related inference expenses.

“Asking every user to configure their own agentic environment is a recipe for failure at best and breaches at worst,” Chief Executive Officer Rob Whiteley wrote in a blog post. “This is where Coder has built for years.”

Coder will use its funding round to build new AI and development environment management features. The company also plans to grow its international presence.
